Overview

The Chevalier QP1620-L is a small high-speed vertical machining center that can be ordered around either a #40 or a #30 spindle. No other machine in the QP series offers the choice: the spindle taper row reads #40 Big Plus / #30, and the tool shank row lists BT40 or BT30, each with CT and DIN options.

The drive is a choice as well. Belt drive covers 100 to 10,000 rpm and direct drive 150 to 15,000 rpm, the highest speed in the series. A #30 direct drive machine with a 1 sec tool-to-tool change is a drill-tap style configuration for small aluminium parts, while the #40 version is a small general VMC. Spindle diameter is 2.4 in on the #40 and 2.0 in on the #30, and the maximum tool weight drops from 15.4 lb to 8.8 lb with the smaller taper.

Travels are 20.5 in (520 mm), 14.5 in (368 mm) and 15.0 in (380 mm) in X, Y and Z, on linear ways with rapids of 1,889/1,889/1,417 ipm (48/48/36 m/min). The magazine is a 20+1 arm type. Maximum tool length is 7.9 in (200 mm).

The table is 27.6 in x 12.6 in (700 x 320 mm) and takes 550 lb (250 kg). Chevalier lists high pressure coolant for clearing chips and heat from deep holes, and direct coupling of ball screws to servo motors on all linear axes. The machine weighs 5,070 lb (2,300 kg), occupies 66.1 in x 116.1 in and is run by a Fanuc 0i-M.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can the QP1620-L be ordered with a 30-taper spindle?

The specification table lists the spindle taper as #40 Big Plus / #30 and the tool shank as BT40 (Opt. CT40 or DIN40) / BT30 (Opt. CT30 / DIN30). Spindle diameter is 2.4 in for #40 and 2.0 in for #30, and maximum tool weight is 15.4 lb or 8.8 lb respectively.

02 What spindle speeds are available on the QP1620-L?

Belt drive: 100 to 10,000 rpm. Direct drive: 150 to 15,000 rpm. The table does not say which drive goes with which taper, so specify both when asking for a quotation.

03 How fast is the tool change?

Tool change time is listed as 1 sec tool-to-tool, with a 20+1 arm type magazine. Tools may be up to 3.1 in (Ø80 mm) in diameter with adjacent tools and 7.9 in (200 mm) long.

04 How does the QP1620-L differ from the EM1620L?

Travels, table and weight match. The QP1620-L changes tools in 1 sec against 3 sec on the EM1620L, offers direct drive to 15,000 rpm against 10,000 rpm, and offers a #30 spindle. The EM1620L has the larger magazine, 24+1 against 20+1.
