Overview

The Pinnacle U5 is a small vertical machining center built around an ultrasonic spindle, for grinding and milling brittle and very hard materials. Travels are 510 mm (20.1 in) in X, 410 mm (16.1 in) in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z.

Ultrasonic machining superimposes a small axial vibration on the rotating tool. Pinnacle gives the range of vibration frequency as 20-35 KHz and the range of amplitude as 1-14 µm with automatic frequency sweep, and says the power reaches the tool by non-contact electricity transfer. The stated benefits are lower cutting stress, longer tool life and a surface that needs less polishing.

The materials named on the page are glass, ceramics and semiconductors, along with conductive metals. These are jobs where a conventional cutter chips the edge of the part or wears out quickly.

Mechanically the U5 resembles Pinnacle's small high-speed machines. The spindle is BT30, direct drive at 24,000 rpm with 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp). The table carries 300 kg (661 lb), the magazine 20 tools of up to 4 kg (9 lb), and the specification table lists a rapid feed rate of 48 m/min. The machine weighs 3,400 kg (7,496 lb), runs on 220 V at 15 kVA and takes 1,700 x 2,250 mm (66.9 x 88.6 in) of floor. An amplitude measuring device is optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Pinnacle U5 designed to machine?

Brittle, extra hard and tough materials. Pinnacle names conductive metallic materials and non-conductive, non-metallic brittle materials such as glass, ceramics and semiconductors, and lists the dental, medical, 3C, hardware, green and aerospace industries.

02 What are the ultrasonic parameters of the U5?

The range of axial tool vibration frequency is 20-35 KHz and the range of amplitude 1-14 µm, with automatic frequency sweep. Electricity is transferred to the spindle without contact, and Pinnacle quotes a transfer efficiency of up to 93%.

03 What spindle speed and taper does the U5 have?

The spindle is BT30 with a maximum speed of 24,000 rpm, direct drive. Power is 3.7 / 5.5 kW (5.0 / 7.4 hp), continuous and 30 minute, and the clamping force 250 kgf.

04 How does the U5 differ from the U8?

Only in size. The Pinnacle U8 has 810 mm (31.9 in) of X and 510 mm (20.1 in) of Y and weighs 3,600 kg (7,937 lb). The ultrasonic spindle, the 20-tool magazine and the 300 kg table load are the same.
