Overview

The Willemin-Macodel 501S2 is the linear-motor member of the maker's 3-axis line. Travels are 400 mm in X, 200 mm in Y and 385 mm in Z, the table is 600 x 280 mm, and the axes feed at up to 60 m/min. Willemin-Macodel calls it a 3- to 4-axis machine with a vertical spindle and names watch plates and bridges as its typical work.

Direct-drive motors on the axes are what the maker's Full Linear technology refers to. With no ballscrew in the drive train, reversals on small contours do not depend on screw wind-up, and the 0.0125 µm axis resolution can be used at higher feed. The 401S2 has that resolution too, but at 40 m/min.

Where this machine pulls furthest ahead is tool storage. The base magazine has 48 pockets, the bracketed sizes are 72, 96 and 120, and a 224-position tool magazine appears under other options. Changeover stays at 0.8 sec tool to tool. A shop can therefore keep the tooling of several part families loaded and switch jobs without touching the magazine.

The grooved table carries 4 grooves of 12-H8 at 80 mm. The spindle is HSK-E40 at 30,000 min-1, or 42,000 min-1 in brackets. Control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro, with a HEIDENHAIN TNC 7 in brackets, and the footprint is 1,870 x 2,165 x 2,300 mm on 4 m².

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Linear-motor axes feeding at up to 60 m/min with 0.0125 µm resolution
  • 400 mm of X travel over a 600 x 280 mm grooved table
  • Magazine sizes of 48, 72, 96 or 120 tools, plus a 224-position magazine among the options
  • 0.8 sec tool to tool and under 3 sec chip to chip

Limitations

  • Y travel is 200 mm, no more than on the 401S2
  • Floor area grows to 4 m², against 3 m² for the 401S2
  • Every magazine above 48 tools is a bracketed or optional size
  • Spindle power and torque are not given

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does Full Linear mean on the 501S2?

Willemin-Macodel uses the term for axes equipped with direct-drive motors. On the 501S2 the linear axes feed at up to 60 m/min and resolve 0.0125 µm. The maker ties this to high dynamics and thermal stability on parts that need precision and a fine surface finish.

02 How many tools can the 501S2 carry?

The table lists 48 tools with 72, 96 and 120 as bracketed sizes, and the headline text confirms a maximum capacity of 120 on-board tools. A 224-position tool magazine is also listed under the various options. Tool-to-tool changeover is 0.8 sec.

03 What size of part does the 501S2 machine?

The maker states a surface area of 400 x 200 mm, which equals the X and Y travel. Z travel is 385 mm. The grooved table itself is 600 x 280 mm with 4 grooves of 12-H8 spaced 80 mm centre-to-centre.

04 Which control does the 501S2 use?

A FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro is the listed control, and a HEIDENHAIN TNC 7 is printed in brackets as the alternative. The smaller 401S2 lists a FANUC 0i-MF PLUS iHMI Pro with the same bracketed alternative.
