Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Huron Tachyon 5 FT that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Huron Tachyon 5 FT is the wider fixed-table Tachyon: 550 mm (21.7 in) of X travel with 400 mm of Y and 450 mm of Z. It is a vertical drilling-tapping centre with a BBT 30 spindle at 24,000 rpm, and its job is short-cycle work on small parts.
One detail of the table stands out. The fixed table is 600 x 400 mm, only slightly longer than the X stroke, so nearly the whole surface is reachable. On the Tachyon 4 FT the same table sits under 400 mm of X, which leaves the table ends for clamping only. The Tachyon 5 FT therefore makes sense when two fixtures or a long part must be machined along the full table length. Table load is 400 kg (882 lb) on both.
Rapid traverse is 60 m/min in X, Y and Z, and because the axes carry the spindle and not the workpiece, acceleration does not depend on what is clamped. Positioning is stated as 0.006 mm, repeatability as 0.004 mm.
Spindle output depends on the drive package: 20 kW and 21 Nm with Siemens, 6 kW and 7.3 Nm with Fanuc. The magazine holds 24 tools of up to 80 mm diameter. The machine is 1,610 mm wide, 3,060 mm deep and weighs 3,700 kg (8,157 lb).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 550 mm of X travel covers almost the full 600 mm table length
- 60 m/min rapid traverse with all three axes on the tool side
- 24,000 rpm for small drills, taps and end mills
- Compact at 1,610 x 3,060 mm with doors open and conveyor
- 24-tool changer for tools up to 80 mm in diameter
Limitations
- Y travel is 400 mm and cannot be extended within the FT versions
- Spindle torque is 21 Nm (Siemens) or 7.3 Nm (Fanuc), so large cutters are out
- Tool weight limit of 3 kg
- No pallet change: loading stops the spindle, unlike the Tachyon 5 R

Frequently Asked Questions
01
550 mm in X, 400 mm in Y and 450 mm in Z. The fixed table measures 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) and is rated for 400 kg (882 lb).
02
The FT is the fixed-table version. Huron's pallet-type variant with the same 550 x 400 x 450 mm travels is the Tachyon 5 R, which has two tables of 600 x 400 mm, each rated for 250 kg, on a rotating divider.
03
It depends on the drive package. Huron's table gives 20 kW, 21 Nm and a 9,000 rpm characteristic speed for Siemens, and 6 kW, 7.3 Nm and 8,000 rpm for Fanuc. Maximum speed is 24,000 rpm in both cases, on a BBT 30 taper.
04
The automatic tool changer has 24 housings. Tools can be up to 80 mm in diameter, 200 mm long and 3 kg (7 lb). These limits are typical of 30-taper machines and suit drills, taps and small end mills.
