Overview

The Hurco VMX6030i is a wide-format vertical machining center that breaks from the standard VMX mold by offering 762 mm (30 in) of Y-axis travel instead of the 508 mm (20 in) found on most VMX models. With travels of 1,524 x 762 x 508 mm (60 x 30 x 20 in), it's designed for shops that need to reach further across wide workpieces.

That extra 10 inches of Y-travel is transformative. A standard 20-inch Y-axis limits you to reaching 10 inches from table center in either direction. With 30 inches, you can machine parts up to 24 inches wide without repositioning, handle wider fixtures, and set up multiple vises across the Y direction. For mold work, die plates, and large fixture plates, the extra Y is often more valuable than extra X.

The spindle is the familiar 12,000 RPM Big Plus CAT 40 producing 13.4 kW (18 hp) and 213 Nm (157 ft-lbs) of torque. Table dimensions are 1,524 x 762 mm (60 x 30 in) with a 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) max load. The wider table comfortably holds three 6-inch vises across the Y direction, tripling throughput on small parts compared to a 20-inch-wide table.

The 40-tool arm-type ATC is standard VMX fare. The machine uses roller linear guides on X and Y with box way on Z. Rapids hit 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on X, 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on Y, and 27 m/min (1,063 ipm) on Z. The Y-axis rapids are slightly slower than X due to the heavier saddle casting required for the wider column.

At approximately 10,000 kg (22,046 lb), the VMX6030i is a seriously heavy machine. The wider column and saddle castings add substantial mass, which is good for rigidity but demands a proper foundation. WinMax control is standard.

Pricing runs $160,000-$200,000 new. The 50-taper variant (VMX6030i-50T) adds $10-15K. Used machines from 2016-2021 trade in the $85,000-$140,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 762 mm (30 in) Y-travel enables machining wide parts and multi-vise setups that 20-inch machines can't handle
  • 60x30" table supports triple vise setups across the Y-axis, tripling throughput on small parts
  • 2,500 kg table load handles heavy workpieces, large fixtures, and rotary tables
  • 10,000 kg machine weight provides excellent rigidity across the large work envelope
  • 40-taper tooling keeps costs manageable despite the large machine footprint
  • 40-tool ATC supports complex multi-operation work without frequent tool changes

Limitations

  • 18 hp spindle may be underpowered for the machine's full travel envelope in steel
  • 10,000 kg weight requires a substantial concrete foundation and careful installation
  • Very large footprint demands significant shop floor space
  • 40-taper limits heavy roughing capability — the 50T version may be necessary for steel-heavy work
  • At $160-200K, price competition is stiff from other builders offering similar or larger machines

Best For

Mold and die shops working on wide mold bases and large die plates Shops that need multi-vise setups across the Y-axis for high-throughput small part production Aerospace shops machining wide structural components and fixture plates Job shops cutting large aluminum plates, heat sinks, and enclosures Shops making large fixture plates and tooling that require wide Y-axis reach Production environments where loading three vises across 30 inches of Y significantly reduces cycle time

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX6030i cost?

New base price starts around $160,000. Configured with through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and options, expect $180,000-$200,000. Used VMX6030i machines from 2016-2021 sell for $85,000-$140,000.

02 Why is 30 inches of Y-travel important?

Standard VMCs offer 20 inches of Y, limiting your reach to 10 inches from table center. With 30 inches, you can machine parts up to 24 inches wide, set up three vises across the table, or reach deeper into tall fixtures without repositioning. For mold work and large plate machining, the extra Y is often the critical dimension.

03 How does the VMX6030i compare to the VMX64i?

The VMX64i offers 4 more inches of X-travel (64 vs 60 in) but only 20 inches of Y. The VMX6030i gives 10 more inches of Y-travel (30 vs 20 in). Choose the 6030i for wide parts and multi-vise setups; choose the 64i for longer parts where Y-width isn't critical.

04 Should I get the 40-taper or 50-taper version?

For aluminum, composites, and light steel work, the 40-taper is faster and cheaper to tool. For steel mold bases, die plates, and heavy roughing, the 50-taper VMX6030i-50T provides the torque needed to push large cutters at production feeds.

05 What foundation does a VMX6030i need?

At 10,000 kg (22,046 lb), the VMX6030i needs a minimum 10-inch reinforced concrete foundation, ideally 12 inches. The wide Y-axis creates moment loads during cutting that lighter foundations can't handle. Consult Hurco's installation guide for specific pad dimensions and anchor bolt patterns.
