Overview

The Kent CNC BM-3 is a 3-axis CNC mill with a quill head, 30 x 16 x 22 in (762 x 406 x 559 mm) of X, Y and Z travel, a 10 x 50 in (254 x 1,270 mm) table and a 3 hp (2.2 kW) R8 spindle that runs to 4,500 rpm. It can be worked three ways: as a manual machine with DRO, through conversational programming, or from G-code.

That range of operating modes comes from the Acu-Rite MillPwr-G2 control, a 3-axis conversational unit with a 12.1 in color LCD. Programs and data move through dual USB ports at the front and back, Ethernet or RS-232. An Intek control is listed as the option.

The head keeps the feel of a manual mill. The quill is 3-3/8 in (86 mm) in diameter with 5 in (127 mm) of travel and three power feeds of 0.0017, 0.0032 and 0.0054 in/rev. Listed capacities are 1 in (25 mm) for manual drilling, 0.37 in (9 mm) for power drilling, 6 in (152 mm) for boring and 2.5 in³/min (41 cm³/min) for milling. Those are light-duty figures, as a 3 hp (2.2 kW) R8 spindle would suggest; a #30 taper is the option. The speed range is given as 60-550-4,500 rpm.

Where the BM-3 differs from Kent CNC's KTM-3VKF, which shares the table size, spindle power and top speed, is in what it carries. The BM-3 takes 1,480 lb (671 kg) distributed on the table and weighs 3,960 lb (1,796 kg). The KTM-3VKF is rated at 850 lb (386 kg) at the table center and weighs 3,100 lb (1,406 kg). With 22 in (559 mm) of Z travel and 2 to 24 in (51 to 610 mm) between spindle nose and table, the BM-3 also has room for tall fixtures and long drills. Spindle center to column is 17.8 in (452 mm), and the table has three 5/8 in T-slots.

The listed supply is 220 volts, 60 Hz, 3-phase, 60 Amps. Shipping weight is 4,100 lb (1,860 kg) in a 98 x 58 x 83 in (2,489 x 1,473 x 2,108 mm) package.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Runs as a manual/DRO machine, conversationally or from G-code on the Acu-Rite MillPwr-G2 control
  • 22 in (559 mm) of Z travel with 2-24 in (51-610 mm) from spindle nose to table
  • Table load of 1,480 lb (671 kg) distributed, against 850 lb (386 kg) at the center on the KTM-3VKF
  • Quill with 5 in (127 mm) of travel and power feeds of 0.0017 / 0.0032 / 0.0054 in/rev
  • Dual USB, Ethernet and RS-232 connections for program transfer

Limitations

  • 3 hp (2.2 kW) spindle with a listed milling capacity of 2.5 in³/min (41 cm³/min)
  • R8 taper as standard (#30 optional), which limits tool size and rigidity
