Overview

The AXA VSC 1 - XTS is the slimmest of AXA's long-bed travelling column machining centres. X travel is chosen at order between 1,760 mm and 9,000 mm (69.3 to 354.3 in), while the cross-section stays small: 550 mm (21.7 in) of Y and 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z. That makes it a machine for long, narrow work such as profiles, rails and rows of small parts, not for tall or deep components.

The table is fixed and runs the length of the bed. AXA gives the clamping surface as X travel plus 400 mm by the Y travel, with three T-slots and a load rating of 800 kg/m². As an option the X axis can be divided for pendulum machining, and the data sheet gives each side half of the X travel less 400 mm.

A short tool change suits a machine that often works on many small features. The VSC 1 changes tools in approx. 4 s, the quickest figure in the VSC table, and the XTS magazine grows from 22 pockets to as many as 216 by adding towers. AXA says the magazine's transport unit has its own drive and travels at up to 120 m/min to wherever the spindle is on the bed.

Standard rapids are 30/30/25 m/min in X/Y/Z, and 40/40/30 m/min is an option here where the larger VSC 2 has it as standard. The SK 40 spindle is drive no. 110 with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. Drives no. 100 and no. 111 are the listed alternatives.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X travel from 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm on a narrow machine with 550 mm of Y
  • Tool change time of approx. 4 s, the shortest in the VSC range
  • XTS magazine expandable from 22 up to 216 pockets, e.g. with 3 fully equipped towers
  • Optional pendulum machining with two work zones on one bed
  • Fixed table: long workpieces rest along the whole bed while the column travels

Limitations

  • Z travel of 600 mm and a maximum of 780 mm between table and spindle nose limit part height
  • Rapids of 40/40/30 m/min are an option; the standard machine has 30/30/25 m/min
  • Only drives no. 100 and no. 111 are optional; the 255 Nm drive no. 113 is listed from the VSC 2 upward
  • Table load of 800 kg/m² is the lowest rating in the VSC series

Best For

Long, slender parts such as profiles and rails Rows of small parts clamped along a bed of up to 9,000 mm Pendulum machining of short-cycle parts SK 40 work with frequent tool changes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long can the AXA VSC 1 - XTS be built?

The data sheet gives an X-traverse range of 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm (69.3 to 354.3 in). The clamping surface is the X travel plus 400 mm in length and the Y travel in width. AXA also offers a split machine bed so that a long machine can be divided for transport and installation.

02 What is pendulum travel on the VSC 1?

Pendulum machining divides the bed into two work zones so that one is loaded while the other is machined. AXA lists it as an option and gives the travel of each zone as (X-axis - 400) / 2 mm, that is half of what remains after 400 mm is taken off the X travel.

03 How many tools can the XTS magazine hold?

22 pockets are standard and the magazine is optionally expandable up to 216, which AXA illustrates with 3 fully equipped towers. Tools can be 85 mm in diameter, 135 mm with free adjacent pockets, and 400 mm long. Pockets within a tower can be added later.

04 How does the VSC 1 - XTS compare with the VSC 2 - XTS?

The VSC 2 - XTS has the same X range but more room in the other axes: 600 mm of Y and 850 mm of Z, a table rated at 1,000 kg/m² and 40/40/30 m/min rapids as standard. The VSC 1 is the smaller machine, with a tool change of approx. 4 s.
