Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford DMC-3100SH that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
For three-metre steel parts that need heavy cuts, the Johnford DMC-3100SH is the first machine in the range where frame and spindle are matched to the job. It combines 3,100 x 1,778 x 800 mm (122 x 70 x 31.5 in) travels with a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle and a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) Hi Lo Gear drive.
Compare it with the DMC-3100H, which has the same taper but 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of Y, a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) geared motor and a table rated 6,000 kg (13,200 lb). The SH carries 10,000 kg (22,000 lb). A three-metre cast iron bed or a welded frame of that length is more likely to stay inside ten tonnes than six, so for such parts the SH removes the main reservation about the smaller frame.
It gives something up in return. Rapid traverse is 12 m/min (472 ipm) in X, Y and Z, and the footprint is 8,693 x 4,600 x 3,883 mm (342.2 x 181.1 x 152.9 in). The machine weighs 26,000 kg (57,270 lb), slightly less than the 26,800 kg (59,000 lb) of the DMC-3100H despite the wider table.
Tooling limits are those of the 50-taper changer: Ø200 mm (Ø7.8 in) without adjacent tools, 400 mm (15.7 in) long, 15 kg (33 lb). Standard speed is 6,000 rpm. A built-in spindle at 10,000 rpm, rated 26 / 31 kW (34.9 / 41.6 hp) or 31 / 40 kW (41.6 / 53.6 hp), is offered for shops that finish as well as rough.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 10,000 kg (22,000 lb) table load, against 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) on the DMC-3100H
- 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) geared 50-taper spindle on a 90 mm (3.5 in) bearing
- 3,100 mm (122 in) of X and 1,778 mm (70 in) of Y over a 3,200 x 1,500 mm (126 x 59 in) table
- Accepts Ø200 mm (Ø7.8 in) cutters with adjacent pockets empty
Limitations
- 12 / 12 / 12 m/min (472 / 472 / 472 ipm) rapids
- 6,000 rpm standard speed; 10,000 rpm requires a built-in spindle
- Y travel of 1,778 mm (70 in), where the DMC-3100PH has 2,300 mm
- 24 tools as standard, with larger magazines as options
