Overview
The Hwacheon SIRIUS-UL+ is a 40-taper vertical machining center with 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X, 600 mm (23.6 in) of Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z travel over a 1,200 x 600 mm (47.2 x 23.6 in) table. Four spindle speeds are listed, 12,000, 14,000, 20,000 and 24,000 rpm, all on a built-in motor whose power ratings start at 37 kW (49.6 hp), and the axes rapid at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm).
Power is high for a 40-taper machine of this size. The 12K, 20K and 24K spindles are rated 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp), and the 14K version 37 / 22 kW (49.6 / 29.5 hp), the higher pair of the two listed ratings, which makes it the natural pick for roughing steel. The 20K spindle can take through-spindle coolant as an option. Tooling also depends on the speed: the 12K, 14K and 20K spindles use MAS-403 BBT-40 shanks, with CAT-40, SK-40 or HSK-A63 as options, while the 24K uses HSK-A63.
The table carries 800 kg (1,764 lb), or 700 kg (1,543 lb) when a magnetic table is fitted. That magnetic option points to die and mould plates held flat without clamps. Five T-slots, 18 mm at 100 mm pitch, are provided for conventional fixturing, and the spindle nose comes within 150 mm (5.9 in) of the table and rises to 600 mm (23.6 in).
The 30-tool magazine, 40 as an option, selects by memory random and accepts tools up to Ø90 mm (Ø3.5 in) with neighbours or Ø170 mm (Ø6.7 in) with empty adjacent pockets, 300 mm (11.8 in) long and 8 kg (18 lb). Compared with the SIRIUS-UM+, whose 850 x 500 mm (33.5 x 19.7 in) table also takes 800 kg (1,764 lb) and which offers 32,000 rpm, the SIRIUS-UL+ gives more travel and faster rapids but tops out at 24,000 rpm.
At 11,800 kg (26,014 lb) it needs 3,990 x 2,740 mm (157.1 x 107.9 in) of floor and 3,170 mm (124.8 in) of height, 55 kVA, and air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa x 690 NL/min. The coolant tank holds 430 L (114 US gal) and the control is Fanuc 31i-B.
