Overview

Five metres long and 2,200 mm wide, the table of the Hartford SW-523 is made for long work. This box-guideway double-column machining center has 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of X travel, 2,300 mm (90.6 in) of Y and a table load of 14,000 kg (30,864 lb).

On a moving-table bridge machine the X axis is the long one, and it carries both the table and the part. Hartford supports the X axis ballscrew on this model, a detail it lists specifically for the SW-523. A five-metre screw that is held only at its ends sags and whips; intermediate support keeps positioning consistent along the stroke.

The spindle is #50. In gear form it runs 4,000 / 6,000 rpm, a low range chosen for torque, and in DDS form 10,000 / 12,000 rpm. The base motor is 15/18.5 kW and the options are 18.5/22 kW, 22/26 kW and 30/37 kW (Cont. / 30 min).

Z travel is 780 mm, optionally 1,070 mm. The T-slot row reads 28 x 250 (20) mm. An S-type changer, listed as S: 20, or an arm-type changer with 32 tools, or 40, feeds BT-50 tools. As across the line, an angle head is available for machining the long sides of a part.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of X travel with a supported X axis ballscrew
  • 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) table load
  • Low-range #50 gear spindle at 4,000 / 6,000 rpm
  • Motor options up to 30/37 kW (Cont. / 30 min)
  • Angle head available for side machining

Limitations

  • Y travel of 2,300 mm (90.6 in) barely exceeds the 2,200 mm table width
  • Table load per metre is lower than on the shorter SW-423
  • Arm-type magazine limited to 32 tools, or 40
  • Z travel of 780 mm unless the 1,070 mm option is taken

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Hartford SW-523?

X is 5,000 mm (196.9 in), Y is 2,300 mm (90.6 in) and Z is 780 mm, with 1,070 mm as the option. The table measures 5,000 x 2,200 mm (196.9 x 86.6 in).

02 How much weight can the SW-523 take?

14,000 kg (30,864 lb) as an average table load. T-slots are listed as 28 x 250 (20) mm along the table. Workholding and risers are part of that load.

03 Why does the SW-523 have a supported X ballscrew?

Hartford lists X axis ballscrew support for improved machining accuracy on this model. Over 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of travel, supporting the screw limits sag and keeps positioning even along the stroke.

04 Which spindle should be chosen on the SW-523?

The #50 gear spindle at 4,000 / 6,000 rpm for roughing and heavy cuts, the #50 DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm for finishing. Motors range from 15/18.5 kW to 30/37 kW.
