Overview
The Mazak VCN-700D is the current-generation variant of the VCN-700, featuring Mazak's integral spindle/motor design and updated SmoothG CNC. With travel of 1,537 x 700 x 650 mm (60.5 x 27.5 x 25.6 in), it is the largest machine in the VCN lineup and targets shops machining long, heavy workpieces that exceed the capacity of standard 40-inch VMCs.
The 'D' designation indicates the integral spindle/motor construction that eliminates belts and couplings between spindle and motor. This direct-drive approach reduces vibration, heat generation, and maintenance while delivering smoother power delivery across the full RPM range. The standard spindle turns at 12,000 RPM with 30 kW (40 hp) through a CAT 40 taper, with an 18,000 RPM high-speed option available for aluminum and non-ferrous work.
The table measures 1,740 x 700 mm (68.5 x 27.5 in) with 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) load capacity. This combination of long table and high load rating makes the VCN-700D a natural choice for heavy mold bases, large structural components, and multi-part fixture setups. The 30-tool arm-type ATC delivers 1.3-second tool-to-tool changes, with a 48-tool option for complex programs.
Meehanite cast iron C-frame construction with a wide-base A-frame column provides mass and rigidity. Linear roller guides on all axes ensure positioning accuracy across the extended travel range. The MAZATROL SmoothG CNC with Quick Mazatrol conversational programming handles both shop-floor programming and complex CAM-generated toolpaths.
New VCN-700D machines run $185,000-$300,000 depending on spindle options and accessories. The VCN-700D competes with the Okuma GENOS M660-V, Haas VF-10, and DMG Mori CMX 1100 V in the long-bed VMC segment.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 60.5-inch X-travel on a 68.5-inch table handles long mold bases, structural parts, and multi-part fixtures that standard VMCs cannot accommodate
- Integral spindle/motor design eliminates belts for reduced vibration, less maintenance, and smoother power delivery
- 2,000 kg table load supports heavy steel and cast iron workpieces, mold bases, and fixture plates without weight concerns
- 18,000 RPM high-speed spindle option enables competitive aluminum machining alongside general steel work
- 1.3-second tool-to-tool changes keep non-cutting time minimal even on programs with frequent tool changes
- MAZATROL SmoothG with Quick Mazatrol provides both conversational and EIA programming for maximum shop-floor flexibility
Limitations
- CAT 40 taper limits tool rigidity for very heavy roughing compared to CAT 50 platforms; the VCN-535C offers BT 50 in a smaller envelope
- Large footprint requires significant floor space; the extended X-travel means more linear space than standard VMCs
- Starting at $185K with options reaching $300K, the VCN-700D is a significant investment over mid-size alternatives
- 30-tool standard magazine is modest for a machine of this size; budget for the 48-tool option on complex programs

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New VCN-700D machines start around $185,000 for a base configuration and can reach $300,000 with the 18K RPM spindle, 48-tool magazine, through-spindle coolant, probing, and 4th-axis integration. Used VCN-700D machines from 2015-2020 sell for $90,000-$160,000.
02
The VCN-700D features Mazak's integral spindle/motor design that eliminates belts and couplings, plus the updated SmoothG control. Earlier VCN-700 models used belt-driven spindles and older Mazatrol controls. The D-series delivers better spindle performance, lower vibration, and improved thermal management.
03
Both target the long-bed VMC segment. The VCN-700D provides higher spindle speeds (up to 18K vs 8.1K RPM), faster tool changes (1.3 sec vs ~5 sec), and the SmoothG control with Mazatrol. The Haas VF-10 costs substantially less. Choose the Mazak for production speed and surface finish; choose the Haas for budget-conscious long-bed work.
04
Yes. The 2,000 kg table load and generous 27.5-inch Y-travel accommodate rotary tables for 4th-axis work. Mazak offers factory-integrated 4th-axis options with direct SmoothG control, and third-party rotary tables are also compatible.
