Overview

The DN Solutions VM 960 L is the long-bed version of the VM 960, pushing X-axis travel to 2,400 mm (94 in) while keeping the same 960 mm (38 in) Y-travel and 800 mm (31 in) Z-depth. When your mold bases and die sets need that extra 400 mm of longitudinal reach, the L variant delivers without forcing you into the much larger VM 1260.

The table grows to 2,600 x 950 mm with a 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) load capacity — 500 kg more than the standard VM 960. That matters when you're clamping heavy mold bases and still need weight budget for fixtures and workholding. The extended bed adds about 1,000 kg to the machine weight, bringing the total to 21,000 kg (46,297 lb).

The 18.5 kW (25 hp) spindle at 6,000 RPM and box-guide construction are identical to the standard VM 960. You're getting the same cutting muscle in a longer package, which means programs, tooling, and operator knowledge transfer directly. Rapids hold at 16 m/min across all axes.

The VM 960 L fills the gap between the standard 960 and the flagship 1260. If the 960's 2,000 mm X-travel is just a bit short but the 1260's 2,500 mm (and $350K+ price tag) is more than you need, the 960 L is the smart choice. It covers mold bases and die sets up to about 2,300 mm long in a single setup.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,400 mm X-travel bridges the gap between the standard VM 960 and the larger VM 1260
  • 4,500 kg table capacity handles the heaviest mid-size mold bases and die sets
  • Same box-guide rigidity and spindle as the standard VM 960 — no cutting performance compromise
  • 21,000 kg machine weight absorbs vibration from aggressive roughing in tool steel
  • 800 mm Z-depth handles deep mold cavities and tall die components
  • More cost-effective than the VM 1260 when 2,400 mm of X is all you need

Limitations

  • 6,000 RPM spindle limits high-speed finishing, same as the rest of the VM series
  • 16 m/min rapids add up over the longer 2,400 mm X-travel during positioning moves
  • 21-ton weight and extended footprint demand more floor space than the standard 960
  • 960 mm Y-travel is unchanged — if you need more width, you're looking at the VM 1260

Best For

Mold shops building long automotive molds that exceed the standard VM 960's 2,000 mm X-range Progressive die manufacturers with die sets in the 2-2.3 meter length range Tooling shops needing VM-series rigidity for elongated workpieces without the VM 1260's cost Automotive bumper and fascia mold builders working with long narrow mold bases

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a DN Solutions VM 960 L cost?

New VM 960 L machines sell for $280,000 to $430,000. The L variant adds a modest premium over the standard VM 960 for the extended bed, larger table, and heavier castings.

02 Is the VM 960 L better than buying the VM 1260?

It depends on your parts. The VM 1260 adds another 100 mm of X-travel (2,500 vs 2,400 mm) and jumps Y-travel to 1,260 mm with an 8,000 kg table. If 960 mm of Y and 4,500 kg table capacity cover your work, the VM 960 L saves you a significant amount of money.

03 Does the VM 960 L share programming with the standard VM 960?

Yes. The spindle, tool magazine, and control are identical. Programs written for the standard VM 960 run on the L variant — you just have more X-travel available. Work offsets and fixturing may need adjustment for the larger table.

04 What's the practical maximum part length on the VM 960 L?

With 2,400 mm of X-travel and a 2,600 mm table, you can machine parts up to about 2,300 mm long in a single setup, allowing for clamping clearance. Longer parts may be possible with creative fixturing, but full machining coverage tops out around 2.3 meters.
