Overview

The Flex Machine Tools GM-20-06 is a 240″ × 72″ vertical machining center with a CT50 spindle rated 40 HP and 6,000 RPM, 19.2″ of Z travel and double guides on the X-axis. It shares its X and Y travels with the G-20-06, and the differences between the two are small but specific.

First, the taper. The G-20-06 is listed with CT50 or CT40; the GM-20-06 is listed with CT50 only, and its 20-tool changer with tool calibrator is specified for that taper. A shop standardised on CT40 holders has no listed route onto this model.

Second, Z. Travel is 19.2″ and spindle-to-table distance runs from 4.25″ to 23.45″, where the G-20-06 has 19.5″ of Z. The difference is small, but it comes off the room available for tall fixtures and long CT50 tools.

Third, the X-axis. Flex's table for this model states double guides on the X-axis and says no more than that, so ask Flex what the arrangement is. The reason to care is that the X-axis guides carry the cutting load of a 40 HP spindle along 240″ of travel.

The remaining figures: rapids up to 1200 IPM in X, 1000 IPM in Y and 170 IPM in Z; positioning accuracy ±0.003 in on X and ±0.002 in on Y and Z; repeatability ±0.0007 in on X and ±0.0005 in on Y and Z. Work is held on three integrated T-slot rails, coolant capacity is 90 gallons and chips are removed by auger. The control is the Omron FlexCNC controller with a mobile 22″ touch screen panel and a hand pendant (AMI5000 remote pendant). X strokes from 10′ up to 50′ and Y strokes from 4′ up to 10′ are listed as available.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Double guides on the X-axis are listed for this model
  • CT50 spindle with 40 HP and 6,000 RPM
  • 240″ of X and 72″ of Y travel, three times the Y of the C-20-02 and CM-20-02
  • 20-tool automatic changer with tool calibrator, specified for CT50
  • X and Y strokes are available in other lengths: X from 10′ up to 50′, Y from 4′ up to 10′

Limitations

  • CT50 only; the G-20-06 is listed with a CT50 or CT40 taper
  • Z travel is 19.2″, slightly less than the 19.5″ of the G-20-06
  • Z rapid is up to 170 IPM, against 300 IPM on the C-20-02
  • The table states double X-axis guides without describing them, and gives no spindle torque

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the GM-20-06 and the G-20-06?

Three listed things. The GM-20-06 has a CT50 taper only, where the G-20-06 offers CT50 or CT40. Z travel is 19.2″ on the GM-20-06 and 19.5″ on the G-20-06. And Flex states double guides on the X-axis for the GM-20-06. X and Y travels, 40 HP, 6,000 RPM, 20 tools and the rapids are the same on both.

02 What does 'Double Guides X-Axis' mean on the GM-20-06?

It is the wording of Flex's own table, and the table does not expand on it. Read plainly, the X-axis runs on a doubled guide arrangement. Ask Flex for the guide type, size and spacing if stiffness along the 240″ axis is important to your work.

03 How much clearance is there under the spindle of the GM-20-06?

Spindle-to-table distance ranges from 4.25″ to 23.45″, and Z travel is 19.2″. Fixture height, part height and the gauge length of the CT50 tool must fit within that. Y travel of 72″ and X travel of 240″ set the plan area.

04 What tooling does the GM-20-06 take?

CT50. The automatic tool changer holds 20 tools and includes a tool calibrator. The spindle is rated 40 HP with a maximum of 6,000 RPM; torque is not listed in the table.
