Overview

The Fehlmann PICOMAX 56L mill puts Fehlmann's three-handwheel mill package on the long-table machine. X travel is 800 mm (31.5 in), Y and Z are 400 mm (15.7 in), and the clamping surface measures 1,400 x 480 mm (55.1 x 18.9 in). The control is a Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch operation.

Two choices define this model, and it helps to take them one at a time. First, mill or TOP: the mill version is worked conventionally through three labeled handwheels for X, Y and Z that are active in parallel, where the PICOMAX 56L TOP uses a drilling lever and handwheels. Second, L or standard: the PICOMAX 56 mill has 500 mm of X on a 908 x 480 mm table, and needs 1.7 m of width against 2.5 m here.

On a 1,400 mm table several fixtures can stay mounted at the same time, which is useful when a part moves through more than one clamping or when jobs alternate. The length also serves the optional CNC dividing unit: with more distance to the tailstock, extra-long workpieces can be machined on four axes. For teaching, the additional key-operated CNC/manual switch hides the CNC functions and reduces feed and speed, and instructors can save the setting that fits the level of the class.

The cooled motor spindle delivers 50 - 12,000 rpm and 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED); Fehlmann quotes 60 Nm of torque and drilling in steel up to Ø 40 mm. Table-to-spindle-nose distance is 120 - 520 mm. An automatic tool changer for 20 or 30 tools is optional and brings the weight from 3,750 kg (8,267 lb) to 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) in the 20-pocket version.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel with conventional three-handwheel operation
  • 1,400 x 480 mm (55.1 x 18.9 in) clamping surface for several fixtures at once
  • Key-operated CNC/manual switch with reduced feed and speed for beginners
  • Switches to CNC mode at any time at the push of a button, on a Heidenhain TNC 620
  • Direct path measuring systems and a cooled 12,000 rpm motor spindle

Limitations

  • Needs 2.5 m of width, against 1.7 m for the PICOMAX 56 mill
  • Y and Z travel remain 400 mm (15.7 in); only X grows in the L version
  • Automatic tool changer (20 or 30 tools) and CNC dividing unit are optional
  • Spindle power is 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) with 60 Nm, sized for toolroom work

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Who is the PICOMAX 56L mill meant for?

Fehlmann describes the mill version as ideal for vocational training and as optimized for simple, conventional milling tasks, with 3 handwheels and basic functions for milling, drilling and threading. The L version adds length: 800 mm of X travel and a 1,400 x 480 mm clamping surface for extra-long workpieces or several fixtures.

02 How does the PICOMAX 56L mill differ from the PICOMAX 56L TOP?

In how it is worked by hand. The mill package has three labeled handwheels for the X, Y and Z axes and a key-operated switch that reduces the machine to a simple conventional mill. The PICOMAX 56L TOP uses a drilling lever and handwheels with its TOP functions. Travels, table, spindle and control are listed the same.

03 What does the L version add over the PICOMAX 56 mill?

X travel and table length. The PICOMAX 56 mill has 500 mm of X travel, a 908 x 480 mm clamping surface, a width of 1.7 m and a weight of 3,050 kg without tool changer. The L version has 800 mm, 1,400 x 480 mm, 2.5 m and 3,750 kg. Y, Z, spindle and control are unchanged.

04 Can the PICOMAX 56L mill run CNC programs?

Yes. It has a Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch operation and can be switched to CNC mode at any time at the push of a button. Fehlmann describes machining of complex parts with the control and its graphically supported cycles, and offers a dividing unit for 4-axis operation as an option.

05 How much does the PICOMAX 56L mill weigh?

The specification gives 3,750 kg (8,267 lb) without tool changer and 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) with the 20-pocket tool changer. The space requirement is 2.5 / 1.9 / 2.5 m for width, depth and height, so plan for a machine that is wider than it is deep.
