Overview

The TRAK TMC14 is the longest TMC toolroom machining center, with 60 in (1,524 mm) of X travel over a 62.99 x 23.62 in (1,600 x 600 mm) table. Y is 27 in (686 mm), Z is 25 in (635 mm), the spindle is 40 Taper and the control is the ProtoTRAK RMX CNC.

Think of it as a stretched TMC12. X travel is 60 in instead of 50 in (1,270 mm) on the TMC12. The table is 62.99 in long instead of 51.18 in on the TMC12. Table load is 2,640 lbs (1,198 kg) instead of 2,200 lbs (998 kg) on the TMC12. Net weight is 16,500 lbs (7,484 kg) instead of 14,300 lbs (6,486 kg) on the TMC12, and the footprint widens to suit. Y, Z, spindle, tool changer and height are the same in both tables.

That shared hardware is a spindle rated 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak / 15 hp (11.2 kW) continuous, turning 50 - 8,000 rpm as standard with 12,000 rpm optional, in a nose 3.75 in (95 mm) across with 2,200 lbs (998 kg) of clamping force at 90 psi. The carousel has 16 pockets for CAT 40 or BT 40 holders. On a table this long, 16 tools is the number to plan around: a row of different parts can exhaust the carousel before it exhausts the travel.

Length also raises the question of traverse time. Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) in Production Ops and 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) in Toolroom Ops, and an end-to-end move across 60 in is noticeably longer at the lower rate.

The footprint is 157.48 x 144.76 in (4,000 x 3,677 mm) with coolant tank, auger and pendant rotated. Shipping weight is 17,000 lbs and the machine stands 120.5 in (3,061 mm) with the head fully up, so door height, floor capacity and the rigging plan need checking before an order is placed.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 60 in (1,524 mm) of X travel on a 62.99 x 23.62 in (1,600 x 600 mm) table
  • 2,640 lbs (1,198 kg) table load, the highest of the TMC5, TMC7, TMC10, TMC12 and TMC14
  • 27 in (686 mm) of Y and 25 in (635 mm) of Z, matching the TMC12
  • 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak / 15 hp (11.2 kW) continuous 40 Taper spindle
  • Spindle nose to table adjustable from 2.25 in (57 mm) to 28.75 in (730 mm)

Limitations

  • Only 16 tools to cover a 62.99 in (1,600 mm) table
  • Occupies 157.48 x 144.76 in (4,000 x 3,677 mm) and ships at 17,000 lbs
  • No more spindle power than the shorter TMC12
  • 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) rapids in Toolroom Ops make for slow moves along 60 in (1,524 mm) of X
  • Tool diameter is capped at 3.14 in (80 mm) and tool weight at 15 lbs (7 kg) including holder

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the TMC14 and the TMC12?

Length and load. The TMC12 has 50 in (1,270 mm) of X, a 51.18 x 23.62 in (1,300 x 600 mm) table, a 2,200 lbs (998 kg) table load and weighs 14,300 lbs net (6,486 kg). The TMC14 has 60 in (1,524 mm) of X, a 62.99 x 23.62 in (1,600 x 600 mm) table, a 2,640 lbs (1,198 kg) load and weighs 16,500 lbs net (7,484 kg). Y, Z, spindle and tool changer match.

02 How much floor space does the TMC14 take?

157.48 x 144.76 in (4,000 x 3,677 mm), width by length, measured with the coolant tank, auger and pendant rotated. It is 105 in (2,667 mm) tall at minimum and 120.5 in (3,061 mm) with the head fully up.

03 How heavy a workpiece can the TMC14 carry?

The maximum table load is 2,640 lbs (1,198 kg), spread over a table of 62.99 x 23.62 in (1,600 x 600 mm). That total has to include vises, fixture plates and any rotary table as well as the part.

04 Which spindle and tool changer does the TMC14 use?

A 40 Taper spindle for CAT 40 or BT 40 holders, 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak and 15 hp (11.2 kW) continuous, with 50 - 8,000 rpm standard and 12,000 rpm optional. The changer is a 16-tool carousel with a listed time of .8 sec from station to station.

05 What services does the TMC14 need?

Electrical supply is 208V three-phase (200-240V is acceptable) at 77.5 A for the standard spindle, with a 480V transformer optional. Compressed air is listed as 3.0 CFM, 25 SCFM at 90 psi. The coolant tank holds 71 gal (269 L).
