Overview

AXA calls the VCC 50 the "big" VCC, and the reason is the spindle. This travelling column machining centre carries an SK 50 taper where the other VCC models have SK 40, and its standard drive no. 131 delivers 286 Nm and 45 kW at 40% DC from a 4,000 rpm spindle that can be ordered up to 9,000 rpm.

Two stronger drives are listed. Drive no. 133 gives 355 Nm and 56 kW. Drive no. 163 keeps the 56 kW but raises torque to 540 Nm, with an optional top speed of 7,500 rpm. That is the configuration for heavy cuts in steel; the faster drives suit mixed work.

The frame is larger to match. Travels are 1,350 x 750 x 850 mm (53.1 x 29.5 x 33.5 in) over a 2,050 x 850 mm clamping surface with five 18 mm T-slots, and the table is rated at 1,200 kg/m². Rapids of 40/40/30 m/min are well above the 25/25/20 m/min of the VCC 2. Positioning accuracy is ± 0.015 mm per 1,000 mm as standard, one step better than on the smaller models, with ± 0.0075 mm optional.

The VCC 50 is also the only VCC with a tilting spindle head on the option list. The head swivels ± 90° or ± 100°, indexes in 0.001° steps and is either hydraulically clamped or fully interpolating. AXA adds that a rotary table can be integrated vertically or horizontally. The magazine holds 22 tools up to 110 mm in diameter, and the data sheet shows no expansion for this model.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the VCC 50 different from the other VCC models?

The taper and the size. The VCC 50 has an SK 50 spindle (HSK A100 optional) with 286 Nm as standard, travels of 1,350 x 750 x 850 mm and rapids of 40/40/30 m/min. The VCC 2 has an SK 40 spindle with 143 Nm, travels of 1,200 x 600 x 700 mm and rapids of 25/25/20 m/min.

02 Is the VCC 50 a 5-axis machine?

The base machine has three linear axes and a vertical spindle. AXA offers a swivel head with SK 50 tool holding system and a vertically or horizontally integrated rotary table as extensions. The head swivels ± 90° or ± 100° and can be hydraulically clamped or fully interpolating.

03 Which spindle drives can be ordered on the VCC 50?

Drive no. 131 is standard: 4,000 rpm (optionally up to 9,000 rpm), 286 Nm and 45 kW at 40% DC. Drive no. 133 offers 355 Nm and 56 kW at the same speeds. Drive no. 163 offers 540 Nm and 56 kW, with up to 7,500 rpm as the optional top speed.

04 What tool sizes does the VCC 50 magazine accept?

The magazine has 22 pockets. Tools can be 110 mm (4.3 in) in diameter with every pocket occupied, 180 mm (7.1 in) with free adjacent pockets, and up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long. The magazine is protected outside the working area.
