Overview

Two work areas of 1,525 mm each: that is how the Hedelius FORTE 9-3600 is most often going to earn its keep. The machine is a 3-axis travelling column centre with 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of X, 900 mm of Y and 1,005 mm of Z, and its data sheet lists pendulum operation as 1,525 x 1,525 mm. Each side is then as large as a mid-size vertical machine, and the spindle moves on while the operator re-clamps.

Hedelius builds its description of this model around tooling times. The 60-position tool magazine travels with the column, which the maker says guarantees tool changes in a matter of seconds whichever work area is active. The data sheet figure is ca. 12 s chip to chip for a pre-selected tool, with a double gripper doing the preselection during the cut.

For single long parts the partition is left out and the full table is used. Its clamping area is 4,080 x 900 mm and it carries 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) on seven 18 mm T-slots spaced at 125 mm. Hedelius mentions vertical slat covers and good accessibility to the work area, both of which count when parts are craned in.

Four spindles are listed. SK40 / BT40 at 14,000 rpm gives 117 Nm and 22 kW as the standard unit, or 185 Nm and 37 kW. HSK A63 is the optional mount, at 18,000 rpm with 136 Nm and 35 kW or at 15,000 rpm with 217 Nm and 50 kW. Feed force is 27,000 N. The machine weighs 19,500 kg (42,989 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Pendulum operation with two 1,525 x 1,525 mm work areas
  • Travelling 60-position magazine keeps tool changes short in both work areas
  • 4,080 x 900 mm fixed table for 4,000 kg (8,818 lb)
  • Z travel of 1,005 mm for tall parts and long tools up to 330 / 390 mm
  • Spindles up to 217 Nm and 50 kW at 15,000 rpm

Limitations

  • ca. 12 s chip to chip adds up on parts with many short operations
  • 19,500 kg (42,989 lb) and 2,960 mm transport height
  • The standard spindle is the 22 kW unit; the stronger spindles and HSK A63 are options
  • Three axes only in the data sheet

Best For

Series parts machined alternately in two work areas Long components up to 3,600 mm with the partition removed Workpieces up to 4,000 kg loaded by crane Deep cavities and tall fixtures that need 1,005 mm of Z

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large are the pendulum work areas on the FORTE 9-3600?

The data sheet lists pendulum operation as 1,525 x 1,525 mm, two work areas of 1,525 mm each along X. Y travel is 900 mm and Z travel 1,005 mm in both. Without the partition the full 3,600 mm of X is available.

02 What load does the FORTE 9-3600 table take?

4,000 kg (8,818 lb) on a fixed table with a clamping area of 4,080 x 900 mm. There are seven 18 mm T-slots at 125 mm spacing. Because the table does not move, Hedelius lists a high table load as a consequence of the fixed machine table.

03 Which spindles are listed for the FORTE 9-3600?

SK40 / BT40 at 14,000 rpm with 117 Nm and 22 kW, which Hedelius names as standard, or with 185 Nm and 37 kW. With the optional HSK A63 mount: 18,000 rpm with 136 Nm and 35 kW, or 15,000 rpm with 217 Nm and 50 kW.

04 Where does the chip conveyor sit on the FORTE 9-3600?

Hedelius offers the chip conveyor optionally in right-hand or left-hand design, so the discharge side can be matched to the shop layout. Chips reach it past a vertical stainless steel slat cover that is meant to keep them falling clear of the work area.
