Overview

The Sharp TMV-MP-2 is a knee mill with two of its axes under CNC. Ball screws and servo drives move the table lengthwise and crosswise under an Acu-Rite MILLPWR G2 control; the quill is still fed by hand, with a digital readout on it. Sharp describes the machine as simple and easy to use, and the layout bears that out: it is a manual toolroom mill that can also run a contour.

Travel is 31 in (787 mm) in X and 15.5 in (393 mm) in Y on a 10 x 54 in (254 x 1,371 mm) table. The quill gives 5 in (127 mm) of Z, the knee another 15.3 in (390 mm) of vertical adjustment and the ram 18.5 in (470 mm) of reach, so the usual knee-mill tricks for getting at an awkward part all remain.

The spindle is an R-8 with a 3 hp (2.25 kW) motor and a variable speed range of 60~4500 rpm. The head tilts 90° left and right and 45° up and down.

Who is it for? A shop whose work is mostly one-offs: bolt circles, pockets, slots and profiles programmed at the machine in conversational form or loaded as G code, with depth set by the operator. Safety handwheels and an auto lube system are part of the standard build. It weighs 3500 lb (1587 kg).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two CNC axes on ball screws with servo drives, quill left manual
  • MILLPWR G2 control with G code and conversational programming
  • 31 in (787 mm) by 15.5 in (393 mm) of table travel
  • Head tilts 90° left and right and 45° up and down
  • Digital readout on table, saddle and quill

Limitations

  • Z depth is set by hand: only the longitudinal and cross axes are CNC
  • R-8 spindle with 3 hp (2.25 kW) limits cutter size

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which axes are CNC on the TMV-MP-2?

Two: longitudinal (X) and cross (Y). Sharp's feature list reads AcuRite Millpwr G2 CNC 2 axes control (Longitudinal, Cross). The quill and knee are positioned by hand, and a 3 axes digital readout covers the table, saddle and quill.

02 What is the work envelope of the TMV-MP-2?

Table travel is 31 in (787 mm) in X and 15.5 in (393 mm) in Y, quill travel is 5 in (127 mm), knee travel 15.3 in (390 mm) and ram travel 18.5 in (470 mm). The table measures 10 x 54 in (254 x 1,371 mm) and the spindle nose stands 6.5~22.4 in (165~570 mm) above it.

03 What spindle does the TMV-MP-2 have?

An R-8 taper spindle with a 3 hp (2.25 kW) motor and variable speed of 60~4500 rpm. The quill is 3.5 in (90 mm) in diameter with three power feeds of 0.0015/0.003/0.006 in (0.04/0.08/0.16 mm) per revolution.

04 How does the TMV-MP-2 differ from the TMV-MP-3?

The TMV-MP-3 puts a third axis under CNC: its standard list names 3 axes ball screws and servo drives where the TMV-MP-2 has two. Table travel of 31 in (787 mm) and 15.5 in (393 mm) and the 5 in (127 mm) Z stroke are the same on both.
