Overview

Five metres of X travel, a 3,300 mm (129.9 in) Y stroke and a crossbeam that moves: the Hartford MW-533 is a moving-crossbeam double-column machining center with a 5,000 x 2,200 mm (196.9 x 86.6 in) table rated for 15,000 kg (33,069 lb).

The Y stroke is much wider than the table: 3,300 mm of travel over 2,200 mm of table. That margin is where the automatic heads work. With a 90 degree head fitted, the spindle points sideways and the head body needs room beside the part; without spare Y travel the side faces could not be reached at all.

Hartford offers three head types, universal, 90 degree and extension, and stores them in a head magazine behind a door that opens only during changeover so chips do not reach the head tapers. Further head magazines can be added.

X travel is 5,000 mm (196.9 in), Z is 1,000 mm (1,200 mm optional) and the W axis is 1,200 mm (1,500 mm or 1,800 mm optional). The #50 spindle runs 6,000 / 8,000 rpm as a gear type or 10,000 rpm as a hybrid type. Motor: 18.5 / 22 kW, optionally 30 / 35 kW. Tools: 32, or 40 or 62.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y travel of 3,300 mm (129.9 in) leaves working room for angular heads beside a 2,200 mm table
  • Head magazine with a door that opens only during head changeover
  • 5,000 mm (196.9 in) X travel and a 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) table load
  • W axis with 1,200 mm of travel and options to 1,800 mm
  • Tool magazine of 32, 40 or 62 tools

Limitations

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the Hartford MW-533 machine the sides of a part?

With automatic angular heads. Hartford lists an auto universal head, a 90 degree head and an extension head, exchanged by a full automatic head changer from an independent head magazine.

02 What is the working envelope of the MW-533?

X 5,000 mm (196.9 in), Y 3,300 mm (129.9 in), Z 1,000 mm with 1,200 mm optional, and W 1,200 mm with 1,500 mm or 1,800 mm optional. The table measures 5,000 x 2,200 mm (196.9 x 86.6 in).

03 What load does the MW-533 table take?

15,000 kg (33,069 lb) as an average load. The wider MW-543 takes 21,000 kg (46,296 lb) on a 5,000 x 3,000 mm (196.9 x 118.1 in) table.

04 How is the Z axis of the MW-533 counterbalanced?

By a nitrogen accumulator weight system. Hartford says it reduces hydraulic tank oil temperature by 50% and saves more than 20% energy. The Z axis itself runs on four linear guideways.
