Overview

The longest 40-taper machine in the DMC-S table is the Johnford DMC-6100S, with 6,100 mm (240.2 in) of X travel and a 6,200 x 1,500 mm (244.1 x 59 in) table. Overall length is 15,590 mm (613.8 in). Weight is 47,000 kg (103,525 lb).

Those are big numbers around a modest spindle, and the mismatch needs explaining rather than excusing. A BT-40 / CAT-40 spindle with 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp), or 18.5 / 23 kW (24.8 / 30.8 hp) in built-in form, does not rough steel at a rate that justifies a 47-tonne machine. It does run small drills, taps and end mills at 8,000 to 12,000 rpm, and on six-metre aluminium or composite tooling that is the useful range. If the parts are steel and the cuts heavy, the DMC-6100SH is the same machine with the No.50 spindle.

Load capacity is the highest of the frame at 14,000 kg (30,800 lb). The table is still only 1,500 mm wide, so the rating suits long, narrow, dense parts or a row of fixtures rather than one broad plate.

Check three things before ordering. First, the building: 15,590 x 4,600 x 4,013 mm (613.8 x 181.1 x 158 in). Second, tool reach, because tools are limited to 320 mm (12.6 in) in length and Z to 800 mm (31.5 in). Third, the control, since the standard Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS can be replaced by Siemens SINUMERIK 828D, Fanuc 31i-MB PLUS or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 6,100 mm (240.2 in) of X travel, the longest in the DMC-S table
  • 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) table load, the highest rating of the frame
  • 8,000 and 10,000 rpm spindle speeds listed, 12,000 rpm optional
  • Several control options beside the standard Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS

Limitations

  • 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) geared spindle on a 47,000 kg (103,525 lb) machine
  • Table width of 1,500 mm limits how the 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) can be used
  • 15,590 mm (613.8 in) of floor length
  • Ø75 mm (Ø3 in) tool diameter with adjacent pockets filled

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the X travel of the DMC-6100S?

6,100 mm (240.2 in). Y travel is 1,778 mm (70 in) and Z travel is 800 mm (31.5 in). The table measures 6,200 x 1,500 mm (244.1 x 59 in).

02 Does Johnford make a longer fixed-column machine than the DMC-6100S?

Not in the DMC-S table, where 6,100 mm (240.2 in) is the longest X travel. Longer X travels in the range are on the sliding double column SDMC models, such as the SDMC-6000x2800x800 with 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of X and 2,800 mm (110.2 in) of Y.

03 Is the DMC-6100S suitable for heavy steel roughing?

The 40-taper spindle with 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) and a 10 kg (22 lb) tool limit is not laid out for it. The DMC-6100SH has a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) on the same frame.

04 How much does the DMC-6100S weigh?

47,000 kg (103,525 lb). For comparison within the family, the DMC-5100S weighs 42,100 kg (92,620 lb) and the DMC-4100S 37,500 kg (82,500 lb).
