Overview

The Hartford MW-543 widens the MW moving-crossbeam double-column machining center to a 3,000 mm table. The table is 5,000 x 3,000 mm (196.9 x 118.1 in), Y travel is 4,300 mm (169.3 in), X travel is 5,000 mm (196.9 in), and the table load is 21,000 kg (46,296 lb).

Compared with the MW-533 on the same X stroke, the gain is in table load, 21,000 kg against 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) for the MW-533, and a metre more Y. That is the difference between a machine for frames and one for large die sets, platens and the housings of heavy gear units.

Wide bridges put demands on the columns. Hartford extends the column bases to 1250mm to reduce cutting vibration, and supports the X and Y ballscrews. The crossbeam is positioned in W by twin ballscrews and twin servo motors over 1,200 mm, or 1,500 mm or 1,800 mm.

Z travel is 1,000 mm, optionally 1,200 mm, on a four-guideway ram. Spindle choices are the #50 gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm and the hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm, with 18.5 / 22 kW or 30 / 35 kW. Automatic universal, 90 degree and extension heads are available, and the tool magazine holds 32, 40 or 62.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 5,000 x 3,000 mm (196.9 x 118.1 in) table rated for 21,000 kg (46,296 lb)
  • 4,300 mm (169.3 in) of Y travel
  • Column bases extended to 1250mm for vibration control
  • Twin-ballscrew W axis with options to 1,800 mm
  • Gear spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm or hybrid at 10,000 rpm

Limitations

  • Z travel of 1,000 mm, or 1,200 mm, relies on the W axis for tall parts
  • Motor options end at 30 / 35 kW (Cont. / 30 min)
  • No spindle faster than 10,000 rpm
  • No published rapid rates for a machine with this much moving mass

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large is the Hartford MW-543 table?

5,000 x 3,000 mm (196.9 x 118.1 in), with an average load of 21,000 kg (46,296 lb). The table moves in X under the bridge, so that load rides on the X guideways.

02 What are the MW-543 axis travels?

X 5,000 mm (196.9 in), Y 4,300 mm (169.3 in), Z 1,000 mm (1,200 mm optional) and W 1,200 mm (1,500 mm or 1,800 mm optional).

03 What keeps the MW-543 rigid at this width?

Hartford cites column bases extended to a width of 1250mm, X/Y-axis ballscrew support, and a Z axis on four linear guideways whose patented binding structure is said to add 20% rigidity while cutting.

04 What is the longer version of the MW-543?

The MW-643, with the same 3,000 mm table width and 4,300 mm (169.3 in) of Y, 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of X travel and a 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) load.
