Overview
The Haas TM-2 is the long-travel toolroom mill: 40 in (1,016 mm) of X with 16 in (406 mm) each of Y and Z, on a table 57.8 × 10.5 in (1,467 × 267 mm). Its spindle is a 40-taper, 4,000 rpm, 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) unit, and the choice between this machine and the TM-1 comes down to X, because the TM-1 stops at 30 in (762 mm).
That length is useful in two ways. A single long part, such as a rail, a bar or a strip of plate, can be machined in one clamping across 40 in. Or several vises can be lined up along the table and worked in turn. The second approach is the usual way to get more from a machine whose table lists no tool changer, since every part receives the same tool before the next one is loaded by hand. Either way the load limit needs watching. The TM-2 is rated for 350 lb (159 kg) on the table, the same figure as the TM-0 with half the X travel, and a row of vises with parts can approach that before any cutting starts.
Motion is deliberate. Rapids and cutting feed are both 200 ipm (5.1 m/min), and with 40 in to cover, a move from one end of the table to the other takes twice as long as on the TM-2P at 400 ipm (10.2 m/min).
