Overview

The Haas TM-2 is the base-model version of the TM-2P, stretching the toolroom mill concept to 1,016 mm (40 in) of X-axis travel without the P-series productivity enhancements. This is the most affordable way to get 40 inches of X travel under a Haas CNC control with single-phase power capability.

The spindle is the same belt-drive CT/BT 40 taper unit used across the entire TM series: 6,000 RPM, 5.6 kW (7.5 hp), 45 Nm (33 ft-lbf) of torque at 1,200 RPM. Grease-packed bearings and air cooling keep the maintenance profile simple. Like all TM-series machines, the spindle is built for reliability in a toolroom role, not for aggressive material removal.

Rapids and max cutting feedrate are both 10.2 m/min (400 ipm) on all axes — the same as the TM-1. The difference between the TM-2 and TM-2P is in the axis drive system and control features. The TM-2P gets faster rapids; the TM-2 saves money by keeping the base-model motion system.

The table measures 1,466 x 267 mm (57.8 x 10.5 in) with three T-slots and 159 kg (350 lb) load capacity — identical to the TM-2P. That is nearly five feet of table length, which is exceptional for a toolroom-class machine. The 10-pocket carousel tool changer delivers the standard TM-series 5.7-second tool-to-tool and 6.5-second chip-to-chip times.

At approximately 2,295 kg (5,060 lb), the TM-2 installs without special foundation work. It accepts single-phase 220 VAC at 40 amps. Base price is around $52,000 — roughly $5,000 less than the TM-2P. For shops that need 40 inches of X travel on a minimal budget with single-phase power, the TM-2 delivers. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 40 inches of X travel at around $52K is the most affordable 40-inch CNC mill available with single-phase capability
  • Nearly 5-foot table length accommodates long fixture plates and rail-type workpieces
  • Runs on single-phase 220 VAC at 40 amps for shops without 3-phase power
  • NGC control is identical to production Haas machines for complete skill transfer
  • 40-taper spindle accepts standard tooling shared across the Haas mill lineup
  • Approximately $5K less than the TM-2P for budget-constrained purchases

Limitations

  • 400 ipm rapids are noticeably slower than the TM-2P across 40 inches of X travel
  • 6,000 RPM max and 7.5 hp severely limit material removal rates
  • 267 mm (10.5 in) table width is very narrow for a machine with 40 inches of X travel
  • 10-pocket carousel with 6.5-second chip-to-chip is slow for multi-tool jobs
  • 159 kg (350 lb) table load is low even for toolroom work with longer fixtures

Best For

Budget toolrooms needing to machine long parts up to 40 inches on single-phase power Training programs where 40-inch travel is needed but the TM-2P premium is not justified Small shops making long fixture plates, jig rails, and replacement parts Garage shops with single-phase power doing occasional long-part machining Secondary machines for light-duty long-part work in larger shops

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the TM-2 and TM-2P?

The TM-2P has faster rapids and improved servo tuning. Travel, spindle, tool changer, table, and electrical requirements are identical. The TM-2P costs approximately $5,000 more. On a machine with 40 inches of X travel, the faster rapids in the TM-2P make a more noticeable difference than on shorter-travel machines.

02 What does a Haas TM-2 cost?

Base price is approximately $52,000. With probing and basic options, expect $57,000-$65,000. Used TM-2 machines trade in the $15,000-$30,000 range.

03 Should I buy a TM-2 or TM-2P?

If you run the machine daily and regularly traverse the full 40 inches of X, the TM-2P's faster rapids save meaningful time and justify the $5K premium. If the machine runs occasionally for toolroom work, the TM-2 saves money without meaningful impact on your workflow.

04 Can the TM-2 handle long parts effectively?

Yes, the 40-inch X travel and nearly 5-foot table handle long parts well. The narrow 10.5-inch table width is the main limitation — you're restricted to single-row vise setups. For wide parts, you need sub-plates that overhang the table edges, but watch the 350 lb load limit.
