Overview

20,000 N of feed force sets the AXA VSC 50 - XTS apart from the rest of the VSC travelling column series; the VSC 3 - XTS50, the next model down, is rated at 9,000 N. It is the heavy model: SK 50 spindle, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of travel in both Y and Z, and an X axis from 2,000 mm to 9,000 mm (78.7 to 354.3 in).

The drives are chosen for torque. Standard is drive no. 161, with 540 Nm from 28 kW at 40% DC. Drive no. 163 has the same 540 Nm but 56 kW, which holds that torque further up the speed range. At the top sits drive no. 182 with 820 Nm and 81 kW, limited to 4,000 rpm with no faster option listed. The other two can be ordered up to 7,500 rpm.

Size and mass cost some speed. Rapids are 30/30/25 m/min in X/Y/Z where the VSC 3 - XTS50 reaches 40/40/30 m/min, and a tool change takes approx. 8 s. In return the table is rated at 1,500 kg/m², the highest in the series, on six 18 mm T-slots.

AXA's table shows 1,250 mm in brackets beside both the Y and the Z travel. The figures carry no footnote, so ask AXA whether they are options or alternative builds. The XTS magazine holds 30 tools as delivered and extends to 180. Positioning accuracy is ± 0.015 mm per 1,000 mm, and no tighter optional grade is listed for this model.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Feed force of 20,000 N (4,496 lbf), against 9,000 N on the VSC 3 - XTS50
  • Spindle drives up to 820 Nm and 81 kW at 40% DC with drive no. 182
  • 1,000 mm of Y and Z travel, with 1,250 mm also shown in AXA's table
  • Table load of 1,500 kg/m² on six T-slots
  • 30 tool pockets as standard, expandable up to 180

Limitations

  • Rapid traverse of 30/30/25 m/min is lower than the 40/40/30 m/min of the VSC 3 - XTS50
  • Tool change takes approx. 8 s, the longest in the VSC table
  • The standard drive no. 161 has 28 kW; 56 kW and 81 kW need an optional drive
  • No tighter positioning grade is listed, unlike the VSC 3 - XTS50 with its optional ± 0.0075 mm
  • Shortest X travel is 2,000 mm

Best For

Heavy roughing in steel with SK 50 or HSK A100 tooling Large, tall workpieces needing 1,000 mm of Y and Z travel High-torque drilling and boring at low spindle speeds Heavy parts on a fixed table rated at 1,500 kg/m²

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How powerful is the spindle of the VSC 50 - XTS?

It depends on the drive. No. 161 (standard) gives 540 Nm and 28 kW, no. 163 gives 540 Nm and 56 kW, and no. 182 gives 820 Nm and 81 kW, all at 40% DC. The speed range is 4,000 rpm in each case; drives no. 161 and no. 163 can be ordered with up to 7,500 rpm.

02 What are the travels of the VSC 50 - XTS?

X is built between 2,000 mm and 9,000 mm. Y and Z are both 1,000 mm (39.4 in), and the data sheet shows 1,250 mm (49.2 in) in brackets for each. The distance between table and spindle nose ranges from 180 mm to 1,180 mm.

03 Why is the VSC 50 slower in rapid traverse than the smaller models?

AXA does not give a reason. The figures are 30/30/25 m/min for this model with a feed force of 20,000 N, compared with 40/40/30 m/min and 9,000 N on the VSC 3 - XTS50. A drive train laid out for more than twice the thrust is the likely trade.

04 How is pendulum travel calculated on this model?

The data sheet gives (X-axis - 700) / 2 mm. Each of the two work zones therefore gets half of what is left after 700 mm is taken off the X travel. Pendulum travel is listed as optional, and AXA designs the casing as a closed working area in pendulum mode.
