Overview
The H in Accuway UM-85H stands for the faster of two versions of the 850 mm frame. Its BT40 spindle is listed as direct drive at 12,000 rpm, the linear guideways use roller bearings, and rapid traverse is 42 m/min (1,654 in/min) in X and Y and 36 m/min (1,417 in/min) in Z.
Set those against the UM-85, which lists a belt drive at 10,000 rpm, ball guideways and 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) on every axis. The envelope does not change: 850 mm (33.5 in) of X, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z over a 1,100 x 600 mm (43.3 x 23.6 in) table that carries 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). Weight is the same 7,000 kg (15,432 lb), so the gain is in the drive train, not the casting.
A direct-drive spindle has no belt to slip or stretch and suits finishing passes and small cutters at the top of the speed range.
