Overview

The Republic Lagun Millmatic II is a vertical knee mill with CNC on two axes. The table's X and Y movements are under program control, while depth is set the traditional way, with the knee and a quill that has 5 in (127 mm) of travel. Lagun's text calls it the solution for single shot work, prototypes, one-piece jobs and short production runs.

Two-axis control fits a particular kind of shop. Profiles, bolt circles, pockets at one depth and straight-line milling are programmed; drilling and depth changes are done by the operator between moves. Lagun says the Standard F-Series offers full 2-axis CNC control and that the Fanuc 0i-MF control provides menu driven conversational programming in machinist's language as well as full G-Code programming. The feature list also mentions a dual CPU controller design and a 14 in color CRT with graphics.

The machine itself is a full-size knee mill. X travel is 36 in (914 mm), Y travel 15.25 in (387 mm) and Z travel 16 in (406 mm), with 22.2 in (564 mm) of ram travel to reposition the head. The table is 55.25 x 10 in (1,403 x 254 mm) and carries 750 lb (340 kg). A 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor drives an R-8 spindle from 55 to 4,250 rpm.

On the mechanical side the maker lists hardened and ground ways on X, Y and Z, Turcite on the X and Y ways, hardened and ground ball screws of 1 ¼ in diameter on X and Y, and a hard chrome quill 3.38 in (86 mm) in diameter. Automatic lubrication and flood coolant are included.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Full 2-axis CNC control with conversational and G-Code programming on the Fanuc 0i-MF, per the maker
  • 36 in (914 mm) of X travel and 22.2 in (564 mm) of ram travel
  • 55-4,250 rpm spindle range from a 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor
  • Hardened and ground ball screws of 1 ¼ in diameter on the X and Y axes
  • Hard chrome quill 3.38 in (86 mm) in diameter with 5 in (127 mm) of travel

Limitations

  • Z depth is not under CNC control; the Millmatic III adds the third axis
  • R-8 spindle taper limits cutter size and how hard the 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor can be used
  • Table load is 750 lb (340 kg) on a table 10 in (254 mm) wide
  • No tool changer is listed, so every tool change is manual

Best For

Prototype and one-piece work, the use the maker describes 2D profiles, pockets and hole patterns with manually set depths Shops moving from a manual knee mill to CNC without giving up the quill Short production runs within 36 in (914 mm) of X travel

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which axes are CNC on the Millmatic II?

Two. The maker's table lists 2 CNC axes and the description says the Standard F-Series offers full 2-axis CNC control. Depth is set with the quill, which has 5 in (127 mm) of travel, and the knee, which gives 16 in (406 mm) of Z travel.

02 What control does the Millmatic II use?

Lagun names the Fanuc 0i-MF control system, with menu driven conversational programming and full G-Code programming. The feature list adds a dual CPU controller design and a 14 in color CRT with graphics.

03 What are the table size and travels?

The table is 55.25 x 10 in (1,403 x 254 mm) with a 750 lb (340 kg) weight capacity. Travels are 36 in (914 mm) in X, 15.25 in (387 mm) in Y and 16 in (406 mm) in Z, and the ram travels 22.2 in (564 mm).

04 How is the Millmatic II different from the Millmatic III?

Only in the number of CNC axes, as far as the maker's table shows: 2 on the Millmatic II and 3 on the Millmatic III. Table size, travels, the 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor, the 55-4,250 rpm speed range and the R-8 taper are listed identically for both.
