Overview

The Haas VS-1 is an extra-large 50-taper vertical machining center designed for shops that need a massive work envelope without the price of a horizontal boring mill. With 1,524 x 762 x 762 mm (60 x 30 x 30 in) of travel, the VS-1 is the entry point into Haas's VS extra-large VMC series, offering significantly more capacity than any VF-series machine while staying well below the VS-3's 150-inch X-travel.

The spindle is a 22.4 kW (30 hp) unit with a 2-speed gearbox running to 7,500 RPM and delivering 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM through a CT/BT 50 taper. That torque through the gearbox makes the VS-1 a serious metal cutter in steel, cast iron, and stainless. The 50-taper provides the tool clamping force needed for large-diameter face mills, shell mills, and heavy roughing tools.

The table measures 1,626 x 711 mm (64 x 28 in) and supports 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) of evenly distributed load. That capacity handles mold bases, large weldments, manifolds, and structural components that overwhelm 40-taper machines. The 30+1 SMTC provides plenty of tool capacity for complex multi-operation jobs.

Rapids run at 9.1 m/min (360 ipm) on X and 15.2 m/min (600 ipm) on Y and Z. These are not speed-optimized numbers, but on a 50-taper machine built for heavy metal removal, axis force and rigidity matter more than traverse speed. The machine weighs approximately 9,072 kg (20,000 lb).

At approximately $200,000-$260,000 configured, the VS-1 delivers 50-taper, heavy-cutting VMC capability at a fraction of what a horizontal boring mill costs. For shops machining parts up to 60 inches long in a vertical orientation — mold bases, die shoes, large manifolds, structural plates — the VS-1 provides the travel, power, and table capacity to handle the work. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,524 mm (60 in) X-travel handles large mold bases, die shoes, and structural components in a vertical orientation
  • 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque through the 2-speed gearbox delivers aggressive material removal in steel and cast iron
  • 5,000 lb table load capacity accommodates heavy weldments, castings, and fixtures without concern
  • 50-taper spindle provides the clamping force needed for large face mills and heavy roughing tools
  • 30+1 SMTC holds enough tools for complex multi-operation jobs without tool shuttling
  • Priced significantly below comparable large-format VMCs from Japanese and European builders

Limitations

  • 7,500 RPM max spindle speed limits high-speed finishing with small-diameter tools
  • 9.1 m/min X-axis rapids are slow compared to 40-taper machines, adding traverse time on longer parts
  • Base price above $200K represents a significant capital investment for smaller shops
  • 20,000 lb machine weight requires substantial foundation preparation and rigging
05

Best For

Mold base and die shoe manufacturers machining large blocks that exceed VF-series capacity Shops machining large weldments and structural steel plates up to 60 inches long Manifold and valve body manufacturers working in cast iron and steel Heavy equipment and energy sector component manufacturers Job shops that need large-format VMC capability without the cost of a horizontal boring mill

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas VS-1 cost?

Base price starts around $200,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, chip management, and production options, a configured VS-1 runs $230,000-$260,000. This is roughly half the cost of comparable large-format VMCs from Okuma and other Japanese builders.

02 What is the difference between the VS-1 and VS-3?

The VS-3 has 3,810 mm (150 in) of X-travel versus 1,524 mm (60 in) on the VS-1, with a larger table supporting 10,000 lb versus 5,000 lb. The VS-1 is the entry-level extra-large VMC; the VS-3 is for parts over 5 feet long. Both share the same spindle platform.

03 Can the VS-1 handle titanium?

Yes. The 50-taper spindle with 460 Nm of torque and the 2-speed gearbox provide the rigidity and power for titanium roughing. Peak torque at 700 RPM aligns well with titanium surface speed requirements using carbide tooling.

04 How much floor space does the VS-1 need?

Plan for approximately 4.5 x 3 meters minimum clear area for the machine plus operator access. The VS-1 is more compact than the VS-3 which ships in two assemblies. Verify foundation requirements with your Haas Factory Outlet given the 20,000 lb machine weight.
