Overview

The TRAK DPM RX2 is a bed mill with an R8 quill spindle, a 49 x 9 in (1,245 x 229 mm) table and travels of 31 x 16 x 23.25 in (787 x 406 x 591 mm), run by the ProtoTRAK RMX CNC. It is the only R8 machine of the three DPM RX mills: the DPM RX3 and DPM RX5 both list a 40 Taper spindle.

The spindle motor is 3 hp (2.2 kW) continuous with two ranges, 40 - 600 rpm and 300 - 5,000 rpm. TRAK rates the machine at 3 in³/min (49 cm³/min) for milling, 1 in (25 mm) diameter for drilling and ¾ - 10 for tapping. Those are modest numbers. They describe a mill for lighter cuts with R8 tooling, not for heavy stock removal.

The head is what makes it flexible. Its quill is 3 3/8 in (86 mm) in diameter with 5 in (127 mm) of travel and feeds of 0.0015/0.003/0.006 in per spindle revolution, and the head swivels +/- 90° side to side. Spindle center to column face is 18.5 in (470 mm), and there is up to 25.5 in (648 mm) between spindle nose and table.

Rapid traverse depends on the handwheels. With mechanical handwheels it is 250 ipm (6.3 m/min) on X, Y and Z. With electronic handwheels X and Y rise to 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) while Z stays at 250 ipm (6.3 m/min). The listed travels are with way covers installed, and travel with limit switches is approx. 1 in less on each axis.

The table takes 1,320 lbs (599 kg). The machine weighs 3,200 lbs net (1,452 kg) and stands on a base of 23.13 x 40.5 in (588 x 1,029 mm), but allow for the table: 71.25 in (1,810 mm) wide including the table, and 102.53 in (2,604 mm) with full table traverse. Power is 200-240V three-phase at 21A.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • R8 spindle, so tooling from an R8 knee mill carries over; the DPM RX3 and DPM RX5 are 40 Taper
  • Quill with 5 in (127 mm) of travel and three feeds, 0.0015/0.003/0.006 in per spindle revolution
  • Head swivels +/- 90° side to side for angled work
  • Runs on 200-240V three-phase at 21A
  • 1,320 lbs (599 kg) of table load on a machine of 3,200 lbs net (1,452 kg)
  • Electronic handwheels raise X and Y rapids to 400 ipm (10.2 m/min)

Limitations

  • 3 hp (2.2 kW) continuous and a milling capacity of 3 in³/min (49 cm³/min); the DPM RX3 has 5 hp (3.7 kW)
  • The table is 9 in (229 mm) wide under 16 in (406 mm) of Y travel, so wide fixtures overhang
  • With mechanical handwheels, rapids are 250 ipm (6.3 m/min) on every axis
  • Top spindle speed is 5,000 rpm
  • Full table traverse needs 102.53 in (2,604 mm) of width, far more than the 23.13 x 40.5 in (588 x 1,029 mm) base suggests

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What spindle taper does the DPM RX2 use?

R8. That sets it apart from the DPM RX3 and DPM RX5, which both list a 40 Taper spindle. The DPM RX2 quill is 3 3/8 in (86 mm) in diameter with a maximum travel of 5 in (127 mm).

02 What are the travels of the DPM RX2?

31 in (787 mm) in X, 16 in (406 mm) in Y and 23.25 in (591 mm) in Z, measured with way covers installed. TRAK notes that travel with limit switches is approx. 1 in less on each axis. The table is 49 x 9 in (1,245 x 229 mm) and carries up to 1,320 lbs (599 kg).

03 How fast does the DPM RX2 rapid?

It depends on the handwheels fitted. With mechanical handwheels the rapid rate is 250 ipm (6.3 m/min) on X, Y and Z. With electronic handwheels it is 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) on X and Y and 250 ipm (6.3 m/min) on Z.

04 How much floor space does the DPM RX2 need?

The base footprint is 23.13 x 40.5 in (588 x 1,029 mm). Including the table the machine is 71.25 in (1,810 mm) wide and 73.31 in (1,862 mm) long with the electrical door closed, and it needs 102.53 in (2,604 mm) of width for full table traverse. Height is 86.625 in (2,200 mm) minimum and 98.75 in (2,508 mm) maximum.

05 What cutting capacity does TRAK list for the DPM RX2?

Milling capacity is 3 in³/min (49 cm³/min), drilling capacity is 1 in (25 mm) diameter and tapping capacity is ¾ - 10. The spindle is 3 hp (2.2 kW) continuous, with a low range of 40 - 600 rpm and a high range of 300 - 5,000 rpm.
