Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer TC-40V that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer TC-40V is the shortest of the TC-V vertical traveling column machining centers. X travel is 40 in (1,016 mm), and the table, 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm), does not move: the column carries the spindle along it. Because the table is fixed, it is rated for 8,000 lb (3,629 kg), a figure that a moving-table machine of this travel does not approach.
That load rating is the reason to consider a traveling column at so short a stroke. Fryer's MC-40B, a conventional vertical with the same X travel, carries 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) on its table. Heavy dies, dense fixtures loaded with parts, or a tombstone-like fixture plate with hydraulic clamping can sit on the TC-40V without the weight ever being accelerated.
The machine built around that table is substantial: 20,000 lb (9,072 kg) and 160 x 138 in (4,064 x 3,505 mm) of floor. Y and Z travels are each 24 in (610 mm), spindle nose to table runs from 30 to 2 in (762 - 51 mm), and the spindle centre sits 28 in (711 mm) from the column. Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min).
Spindle and tooling come from Fryer's box way verticals. The CAT 40 spindle turns 60 - 8,500 rpm with 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak and 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) at 350 rpm, a 24 station arm type changer swaps tools in 3.0 seconds, and a 50 taper spindle at 6,000 rpm is an option. Fryer offers the series with a Siemens or Fanuc CNC.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Fixed 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm) table rated 8,000 lb (3,629 kg)
- Traveling column, so the workpiece weight is never moved
- 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak CAT 40 spindle with a 50 taper option
- 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) rapids on X, Y and Z
- 4.0 seconds chip to chip with the 24 station arm type changer
Limitations
- Large for its travel: 160 x 138 in (4,064 x 3,505 mm) and 20,000 lb (9,072 kg)
- Table is 24 in (610 mm) deep
- The extended 32" Y and Z travel options are listed for the TC-80V and longer models
- Cutting feed rate is limited to 600 ipm (15.2 m/min)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Its table is fixed and the column travels. Fryer rates the 40 x 24 in (1,016 x 610 mm) table at 8,000 lb (3,629 kg), evenly distributed. The MC-40B, a moving-table vertical with the same 40 in (1,016 mm) of X, is rated 3,000 lb (1,361 kg).
02
X is 40 in (1,016 mm); Y and Z are 24 in (610 mm) each, with 32 in printed in brackets on Fryer's sheet. Spindle nose to table ranges from 30 to 2 in (762 - 51 mm) and the table top is 38 in (965 mm) from the floor.
03
A CAT 40 spindle, 60 - 8,500 rpm, 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak, with a 24 station arm type changer, a 3.0 seconds tool change and 4.0 seconds chip to chip. With the optional 50 taper spindle the table gives a 4 seconds tool change and tools up to 30 lb.
04
40 A at 400 - 500 VAC, 3 phase, with 80 or 125 A shown in brackets for larger configurations. Air is 5 cfm (142 L/min) at 90 psi (6.2 bar), and the coolant tank holds 100 gal (379 L).
