Overview

Between the small VBMA-850 and the much larger VBMA-1300 sits the Republic Lagun VBMA-1000, a 3 axis CNC vertical bed mill with 39 in (991 mm) of X travel and 17 in (432 mm) of travel in both Y and Z. Its table measures 50 x 15 in (1,270 x 381 mm).

The spindle is set up for cutting force more than speed. Top speed is 3,600 rpm from a 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor through an NST# 40 taper, and the maker lists Hi-Low back gears with a strong back gear transmission for heavy cutting. A 3,600 rpm ceiling is comfortable for face mills, large drills and steel; small end mills in aluminium will run below their best speed. The quill travels 5.5 in (140 mm), which is useful for drilling and boring by hand feed.

Load capacity is 1,100 lb (499 kg). That is essentially the same as the VBMA-850 at 1,102 lb (500 kg), so the gain over the smaller machine is reach and table width, not weight. Stepping up to the VBMA-1300 brings a 1,760 lb (798 kg) rating.

Chip and coolant handling is part of the standard build: a flood coolant system with rear splash guard, a chip and coolant tray, and steel telescopic way covers on X and Y. The ways are hardened and ground box ways lined with Turcite, lubrication is fully automatic, and the head has a counterweight on Z. Control is described as a contouring control system on a pendant, with hand wheels on X and Y and a hand lever on Z. The machine is arranged for 3/60/480 volt operation.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 39 in (991 mm) of X travel with a 50 x 15 in (1,270 x 381 mm) table
  • Hi-Low back gears for heavy cutting at up to 3,600 rpm
  • 5.5 in (140 mm) of quill travel
  • Flood coolant with rear splash guard, chip tray and steel telescopic covers on X and Y
  • Positioning accuracy of 0.0004 in/ft and repeatability of 0.0002 in/ft

Limitations

  • Top spindle speed is 3,600 rpm, below the 5,000 rpm of the VBMA-850
  • Y and Z travel are 17 in (432 mm), slightly less than the 18 in (457 mm) of the VBMA-850
  • Table load of 1,100 lb (499 kg) limits heavy fixtures and vises
  • No automatic tool changer is listed

Best For

Plate, bar and fixture work up to 39 in (991 mm) long Steel milling and drilling at moderate spindle speeds Shops that still hand-feed the quill for some holes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the VBMA-1000 table?

50 x 15 in (1,270 x 381 mm), with a weight capacity of 1,100 lb (499 kg). X travel is 39 in (991 mm), so the table is longer than the stroke and the ends are for clamping, not cutting.

02 What spindle does the VBMA-1000 have?

An NST# 40 taper spindle driven by a 5 HP (3.7 kW) motor, with a listed speed of 3,600 rpm. The feature list describes Hi-Low back gears for heavy cutting and a quill with 5.5 in (140 mm) of travel.

03 Does the VBMA-1000 have way covers and coolant?

Yes. The standard list includes steel telescopic way covers on the X and Y axes, a flood coolant system with a rear splash guard, a chip and coolant tray and full automatic lubrication. A halogen work light is also listed.

04 Should I choose the VBMA-1000 or the VBMA-1300?

The VBMA-1300 is a considerably bigger machine: 51 in (1,295 mm) of X travel, 24 in (610 mm) of Y, 28 in (711 mm) of Z and a 1,760 lb (798 kg) table rating. The VBMA-1000 offers 39 in (991 mm), 17 in (432 mm) and 17 in (432 mm) with a 1,100 lb (499 kg) rating, on the same 5 HP (3.7 kW) and 3,600 rpm spindle figures.
