Overview
The Johnford VMC-1600 extends the Large VMC frame to 1,600 mm (63 in) of X travel and raises table capacity to 4,600 kg (10,120 lb). The table is 1,800 x 750 mm (70.9 x 29.5 in), with 850 mm (33.5 in) of Y and 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z. The spindle is BT-40 / CAT-40.
Load is where this model separates from the VMC-1300. The VMC-1300 is rated 3,270 kg (7,194 lb) and weighs 13,500 kg (29,700 lb). The VMC-1600 weighs 17,500 kg (38,500 lb), so the extra travel comes with a much heavier base and saddle, not only a longer table. For a shop that machines large fixtures or mold bases, that is the reason to choose it.
Nothing changes at the spindle. Speed is 80-8,000 rpm through the automatic Hi-Lo gearbox and the motor is 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp). A 4.6 tonne part will often want more power than that for roughing, in which case the VMC-1600HD with its 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) 50-taper head is the alternative. The 40-taper machine keeps the full 800 mm of Z and the higher top speed for finishing.
The table is still 750 mm deep, the same as on the VMC-1300, while Y travel is 850 mm. Buyers who need a deeper table should look at the VMC-1600S, which has a 1,800 x 1,000 mm (70.9 x 39.4 in) table and 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Y. Floor space required is 4,500 x 3,940 mm (177.2 x 155 in).
