Overview

Feeler's FDM-4228 has a 4,000 × 2,600 mm (157.5 × 102.4 in) table under 4,200 mm (165.4 in) of X travel and 2,700 mm (106.3 in) of Y. The load row is where it stands out: 15 ton as listed, 21 ton in brackets.

No other FDM model shows so wide a gap between the two load figures. Feeler's table does not say what changes between them. It should be settled in the order, because a steel mould with its clamping plates, risers and fixtures can pass 15 ton well before it fills a table of this size.

Four metres is also where the FDM overlaps the top of the SVW series. The SVW-4225 has the same X travel and a table 2,000 mm wide rated at 15 ton; the FDM-4228 gives 2,600 mm of table width and the option of more load.

The structure is cast iron with a box-type base and reinforced ribs. Feeler says the spindle head and slide contact surfaces are enlarged to increase rigidity and dampen vibration, which allows larger diameter tools. Listed figures: 6,000 rpm on BT/DIN/CAT 50, rapids of 15 m/min (591 ipm) on X and Y and 12 m/min (472 ipm) on Z, Z travel of 800 mm (31.5 in), and 24 tools. Bracketed: 4,000-8,000 rpm, #40, 3,300 mm of Y, 1,000-1,400 mm of Z and 32 to 90 tools.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Load of 15 ton, or 21 ton as the bracketed rating
  • 4,000 × 2,600 mm (157.5 × 102.4 in) table
  • 15 m/min (591 ipm) rapids on X and Y
  • Enlarged spindle head and slide contact surfaces for larger diameter tools

Limitations

  • The listed 15 ton rating is no higher than that of the smaller SVW-4225
  • Z rapid of 12 m/min (472 ipm)
  • What the bracketed 21 ton rating requires is not explained on the series page
  • No spindle power or torque published
06

Best For

Mould bases up to 4,000 × 2,600 mm Heavy steel moulds needing the 21 ton rating Roughing with large-diameter cutters on a 50 taper

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table load of the Feeler FDM-4228?

The row reads 15 (21) ton: 15 ton as listed and 21 ton in brackets. Feeler does not state what the higher figure depends on, so have the rating you need written into the quotation.

02 How does it compare with the FDM-4232?

The tables are the same size, 4,000 × 2,600 mm. The FDM-4232 has more Y travel, 3,100 (3,700) mm against 2,700 (3,300) mm, and a higher load row of 21 (24) ton.

03 What tools and heads can it change automatically?

Feeler states that the FDM Series supports automatic head and tool changing. The magazine row lists 24 tools with a bracketed range of 32-90. The heads themselves are not listed in the series table.

04 How quickly do the axes move?

Rapid traverse is 15 m/min (591 ipm) on X and Y and 12 m/min (472 ipm) on Z. From the FDM-6228 upward the X rapid is listed at 12 m/min as well.
