Overview

With 28 in (711 mm) of Y travel, the Sharp SVL-4528SX-F is the deeper of the two SVL-4500 vertical machining centers. X is 45.3 in (1150 mm) and Z is 20.1 in (510 mm).

There is a catch in the table Sharp publishes. The worktable is listed at 51.2 x 25 in (1300 x 635 mm) for this model, the same as for the SVL-4525SX-F, so the Y axis travels further than the table is deep. That extra stroke is useful for reaching past the edge of a part with a large cutter, for probing, or for fixtures that overhang the table, but it does not add clamping surface. Ask Sharp to confirm the table size if the job depends on it.

The saddle rides on linear roller ways with two additional box ways under the Y axis, an arrangement Sharp uses on this series to support the table across its full cross travel. Load capacity is 1760 lb (800 kg). Feedback comes from Mitutoyo linear scales on three axes, supplied as standard.

At the spindle the figures are 15,000 rpm, a CAT-40 Big plus taper and a 20/25 hp (15/18.5 kW) direct-drive motor. Thirty tools sit in a side-mount magazine; each may weigh 15.4 lb (7 kg) and measure 11.8 in (300 mm) long. Rapids are 1417 ipm (36,000 mm/min) on X, Y and Z. The control is a FANUC Oi-MF with a 10.4" LCD color screen.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 28 in (711 mm) of Y travel with 45.3 in (1150 mm) of X
  • Rapid traverse of 1417 ipm (36,000 mm/min) on all three linear axes
  • 30-tool side-mount changer taking tools up to 11.8 in (300 mm) long
  • Standard FANUC Oi-MF with high speed AICC, 200 blocks look ahead and rigid tapping
  • Flat type chip conveyor is a standard accessory

Limitations

  • The listed table is 25 in (635 mm) deep, less than the 28 in (711 mm) Y travel
  • Z travel of 20.1 in (510 mm) is short for a machine of this X and Y
  • At 18,260 lb (8300 kg) it needs a proper foundation and rigging plan
  • 2 M memory, Nano smoothing and the FANUC 2 G Data server are extra-cost options
06

Best For

Plate and die work that needs cross travel beyond 25 in High-speed contouring at up to 15,000 rpm Parts up to 1760 lb (800 kg) measured against linear scales Shops with a 220 V, 35 kVA three-phase supply

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the Y travel of the SVL-4528SX-F?

28 in (711 mm). That is the one row in Sharp's specification table that separates it from the SVL-4525SX-F, which has 25 in (635 mm). Both are listed with a 51.2 x 25 in (1300 x 635 mm) table.

02 What are the way and ball screw sizes?

Sharp describes 2 high quality linear roller ways on X/Y/Z axis travel & 2 extra box ways on Y axis travel. The ball screws on X, Y and Z are 1.57 in (40 mm) in diameter, each a double-nut screw centered between the guide ways and, per Sharp, pretensioned and anchored at both ends.

03 How fast is the tool change on the SVL-4528SX-F?

2 sec tool to tool and 7 sec chip to chip, with random tool selection from a 30-tool side-mount magazine. Maximum tool diameter is 2.95 in (75 mm), or 5.9 in (150 mm) without an adjacent tool.

04 What coolant equipment comes with the machine?

A 52.8 gal (200 L) tank with 4 coolant nozzles and a flat type chip conveyor. CTS prepped (70 bar) is a standard accessory, which means the spindle is prepared for through-tool coolant; Sharp's list for this series does not show the pump among the standard items, so ask what completes the system.
