Overview

The Hwacheon L1 is a vertical machining center with two columns 1,150 mm (45.3 in) apart and a 900 mm (35.4 in) wide table, offered in two lengths. The L1 1500 has 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of X travel on a 1,500 x 900 mm (59.1 x 35.4 in) table; the L1 2500 has 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of X on a 2,500 x 900 mm (98.4 x 35.4 in) table. Both share 950 mm (37.4 in) of Y, 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z and a 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) table rating.

Picking a length is mostly a question of part size and floor. The L1 1500 needs 6,340 x 3,585 mm (249.6 x 141.1 in) and weighs 13,000 kg (28,660 lb); the L1 2500 needs 8,540 x 3,585 mm (336.2 x 141.1 in) and weighs 16,000 kg (35,274 lb). Both stand 3,060 mm (120.5 in) tall. Because the table rating is the same on both, a long L1 2500 table carries the same total weight spread over more length, which favours long plates and several setups in a row over a single heavy casting.

Two BT-40 spindles are listed. The 12K runs to 12,000 rpm at 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp); the 20K runs to 20,000 rpm at 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp), so on this machine the faster spindle is also the more powerful one. Bearing bore is Ø70 mm (Ø2.8 in). Rapids are 24 / 36 / 36 m/min (945 / 1,417 / 1,417 ipm) on X, Y and Z, and cutting feed runs to 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm). X, the long axis, is the slowest, with a 6 kW (8.0 hp) motor against 4 kW (5.4 hp) on Y and Z.

The servo-driven magazine and swing arm handle 30 tools, or 40 as an option, in memory-random selection with fixed address optional. Tools may be Ø75 mm (Ø3.0 in) with neighbours fitted or Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with the adjacent pockets empty, 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 8 kg (17.6 lb). The table has five 18 mm T-slots at 160 mm pitch. Plan for 45 kVA at 220V, 60Hz and air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa x 690 Nℓ/min.

Wider work moves to the Hwacheon L2, whose tables are 1,100 mm (43.3 in) wide in 2,500 and 3,000 mm lengths.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two bed lengths: 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of X on the L1 1500 or 2,500 mm (98.4 in) on the L1 2500, both with 950 mm (37.4 in) of Y
  • The 20K BT-40 spindle combines 20,000 rpm with 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp)
  • 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) table rating on either length
  • 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) rapids on Y and Z and cutting feed up to 20,000 mm/min (787 ipm)
  • 30-tool magazine with a 40-tool option, taking tools up to Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with the adjacent pockets empty

Limitations

  • Z travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), with the spindle nose 100 to 600 mm (3.9 to 23.6 in) from the table
  • X rapid is 24 m/min (945 ipm), slower than Y and Z on the long axis
  • The 12K spindle is rated 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp), half the 37 kW (49.6 hp) of the 20K
  • The L1 2500 occupies 8,540 x 3,585 mm (336.2 x 141.1 in) and weighs 16,000 kg (35,274 lb), so foundation and floor need planning
06

Best For

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the L1 1500 and the L1 2500?

Length. The L1 1500 has 1,500 mm (59.1 in) of X travel, a 1,500 x 900 mm (59.1 x 35.4 in) table and weighs 13,000 kg (28,660 lb). The L1 2500 has 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of X, a 2,500 x 900 mm (98.4 x 35.4 in) table and weighs 16,000 kg (35,274 lb). Y, Z, spindles and the 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) table rating are the same.

02 Which spindle options does the L1 have?

Two BT-40 spindles: the 12K at 12,000 rpm and 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp), and the 20K at 20,000 rpm and 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp). Both take MAS-403 BT-40 shanks with a MAS-P40T-1 (45°) pull stud.

03 How does the L1 compare with the Hwacheon L2 and L3?

The Hwacheon L2 keeps the 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) rating but widens the table to 2,500 x 1,100 mm (98.4 x 43.3 in) or 3,000 x 1,100 mm (118.1 x 43.3 in). The Hwacheon L3 has a 3,000 x 1,800 mm (118.1 x 70.9 in) table rated 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The L1 has the narrowest table, 900 mm (35.4 in), and the lightest machines.

04 What tool sizes does the L1 accept?

Up to Ø75 mm (Ø3.0 in) with adjacent tools in place or Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with the neighbouring pockets empty, up to 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 8 kg (17.6 lb). The magazine holds 30 tools, 40 as an option, selected by memory random or, optionally, by fixed address.

05 What does the L1 need for installation?

45 kVA at 220V, 60Hz and compressed air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa x 690 Nℓ/min. Floor area is 6,340 x 3,585 mm (249.6 x 141.1 in) for the L1 1500 and 8,540 x 3,585 mm (336.2 x 141.1 in) for the L1 2500, and both are 3,060 mm (120.5 in) high.
