Overview
The Brother Speedio S700Xd1 is the largest travel model in the first-generation XD1 Speedio line, offering 700 x 400 mm X/Y travel with the XD1 dynamic improvements over the prior generation. It is the direct predecessor to the S700Xd2.
X/Y/Z travels are 700 x 400 x 305 mm. The spindle runs at 16,000 rpm with 7.5 kW on BT30 taper. The 28-tool arm-type automatic tool changer (ATC) delivers fast chip-to-chip times. Rapids are 50 m/min on X/Y and 56 m/min on Z.
The XD1 designation introduced enhanced servo dynamics and improved acceleration over the base X1 series, resulting in faster non-cutting times without changing the mechanical envelope. Table load capacity is 300 kg.
Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.004 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.002 mm. Machine weight is approximately 3,700 kg. Footprint is 1,980 x 2,340 mm.
The S700Xd1 suits shops needing the longest Speedio travel on a budget — used units offer exceptional value as the Xd2 generation has become the new standard.
New machines (when available) price $110,000-$160,000. Used units from 2016-2021 trade $55,000-$100,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 700 mm X-travel, the largest in the XD1 Speedio range
- 300 kg table load handles heavier fixtures
- 28-tool ATC provides 7 more pockets than the 21-tool turret models
- XD1 dynamics improve acceleration over prior X1 generation
- Proven Speedio reliability with large installed base for support
- Compact footprint relative to conventional VMCs with similar travel
Limitations
- BT30 spindle limits depth of cut in steel and hard materials
- Older XD1 generation; XD2 offers further dynamic refinements
- Z-axis travel (305 mm) does not match the generous X-travel
- Slightly heavier than smaller Speedios, requires floor check
- Used availability depends on region and distributor stock
