Overview
The Haas VF-6SS is the Super Speed version of the VF-6, combining the large work envelope of a full-size VMC with the high-speed spindle and rapid traverse needed for production aluminum machining. The 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle eliminates the belts and gears of standard Haas spindles, delivering smoother surface finishes, less vibration, and more consistent accuracy at high RPM. With 1,626 x 813 x 762 mm (64 x 32 x 30 inches) of X/Y/Z travel, this is one of the largest Super Speed machines Haas builds.
The SS designation means more than just a faster spindle. The VF-6SS gets an ultra-fast side-mount tool changer that swaps tools significantly quicker than the standard VF-6 carousel, plus high-speed rapids on all axes. Combined with 22.4 kW (30 HP) of spindle power, the VF-6SS can push aggressive feeds and speeds on aluminum while still having enough torque for steel and cast iron work. The 30+1 side-mount tool changer handles CAT40 tooling, and the Haas NGC control includes Visual Programming, 1 GB memory, and WiFi connectivity.
New VF-6SS machines are estimated between $115,000 and $175,000 — typical Haas value pricing for this much capability. The large work envelope makes the VF-6SS particularly attractive for aerospace shops machining structural aluminum plates, mold shops running large cavity work, and job shops that need big-part capability with fast cycle times. The VF-6SS competes with the Mazak VCN-530C, DMG Mori CMX 600V, and Okuma GENOS M560-V in the large-format VMC segment. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Inline direct-drive spindle eliminates belts and gears, providing smoother operation at 12,000 RPM with less vibration and better surface finish than belt-driven alternatives
- 64 x 32 x 30 inch travel provides one of the largest work envelopes available in a 40-taper VMC, handling oversized plates and mold bases
- Ultra-fast side-mount tool changer significantly reduces tool change time compared to the standard VF-6 carousel, improving cycle times on multi-tool programs
- 1,400 IPM rapids are more than double the standard VF-6's speed, dramatically reducing non-cutting time on large-part programs
- Haas value pricing delivers large-format high-speed VMC capability at 40-60% of what comparable Japanese machines cost
Limitations
- 12,000 RPM maximum is slower than dedicated high-speed machines like the Makino PS95 (20,000 RPM), limiting HSM strategies on small-diameter tools
- CAT40 spindle limits maximum torque and rigidity compared to 50-taper machines when heavy roughing steel and cast iron
- 30+1 tool capacity is adequate for many applications but limits complex multi-feature programs compared to machines with 40-60+ tool magazines
- Through-spindle coolant is optional rather than standard, adding cost to the base configuration for shops that need TSC

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New VF-6SS machines are estimated between $115,000 and $175,000 depending on options. Common additions include through-spindle coolant ($3,000-$5,000), probing ($3,000-$4,000), 4th-axis interface ($1,500), and additional tooling. Check Haas.com's Build & Price tool or contact your local HFO for current pricing.
02
The VF-6SS upgrades the spindle from an 8,100 RPM geared head to a 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive, adds an ultra-fast side-mount tool changer replacing the standard carousel, and increases rapid traverse speeds on all axes. The work envelope and table capacity remain the same. The SS commands a premium of roughly $15,000-$25,000 over the standard VF-6.
03
Yes. While the SS spindle is optimized for high-speed aluminum work, the 30 HP direct-drive motor provides adequate torque for productive steel and cast iron machining at lower RPMs. The VF-6SS is a versatile machine, not a dedicated aluminum-only cutter. It won't match a 50-taper machine for heavy steel roughing, but it handles mixed-material job shop work well.
04
The CMX 600V offers a 12,000 RPM spindle in a smaller work envelope (600 x 560 x 510 mm vs the VF-6SS's 1,626 x 813 x 762 mm). The Haas provides nearly three times the X-axis travel at a comparable or lower price. The DMG Mori offers better positioning accuracy and the CELOS control platform. Choose the VF-6SS for large parts; choose the CMX 600V for higher precision on smaller parts.
05
No. The VF-6SS is CAT40 only. For 50-taper capability with a large work envelope, look at the Haas VF-6/50 (standard speed) or consider the Haas VR-Series. The CAT40 keeps the machine responsive for high-speed work at the expense of maximum torque.
06
Standard coolant is a flood system with programmable nozzles. Optional upgrades include 300 PSI or 1,000 PSI through-spindle coolant (recommended for deep hole drilling and aluminum machining), auxiliary coolant, and a high-pressure wash-down system for chip management.
