Overview

The AXA VPC 40 is the entry model of AXA's compact gantry machining centres: a vertical-spindle portal machine with a fixed table, built for large plate-shaped workpieces. Standard travels are 2,360 mm (92.9 in) in X, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) in Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) in Z, with an SK 40 spindle.

In this design the portal carries the spindle, and AXA drives it in Y on both sides with what it calls a real gantry drive: an individual drive, guideway and direct measuring system for each portal side. Since the table does not move, AXA notes that the footprint is hardly larger than the working area. The enclosure is open above the work area, which allows loading by crane.

Most dimensions can be stretched at order. X is offered as 2,940 mm or 3,400 mm, Y as 1,400 mm or 1,600 mm and Z as 600 mm. Table width follows the Y stroke, from 1,100 mm to 1,350 mm or 1,500 mm, and each table carries 1,500 kg, or 2,000 kg as an option. Note the Z figure: with 500 mm of travel and a minimum of 230 mm between table and spindle nose, this is a machine for flat work.

Drive no. 110 is standard with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. Three optional SK 40 drives cover up to 15,000 rpm (no. 100) or 255 Nm (no. 113). The stationary tool changer holds 22 tools, up to 90 as an option, and changes in approx. 6 s. Rapids are 20/20/20 m/min, or 30/30/25 m/min optionally.

Strengths

  • Fixed-table gantry with 2,360 mm of X as standard and up to 3,400 mm as an option
  • Real gantry drive in Y with a drive and direct measuring system on each portal side
  • Open covering above the work area allows crane loading
  • Stationary tool changer with 22 pockets, expandable up to 90, and approx. 6 s tool change
  • Four SK 40 spindle drives, from 95 Nm with up to 15,000 rpm to 255 Nm

Limitations

  • Z travel is 500 mm, or 600 mm as an option, the shortest in the VPC range
  • Standard rapid traverse is 20/20/20 m/min; 30/30/25 m/min is optional
  • Vertical spindle only: side faces need angular heads
  • Table load of 1,500 kg per table unless the 2,000 kg option is ordered

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the AXA VPC 40?

Standard travels are 2,360 mm in X, 1,200 mm in Y and 500 mm in Z. As optional features AXA lists 2,940 mm or 3,400 mm for X, 1,400 mm or 1,600 mm for Y and 600 mm for Z. The table is about as long as the X travel and 1,100 mm wide, wider with the longer Y strokes.

02 Can the VPC 40 machine the sides of a workpiece?

The spindle is vertical. AXA states that the implementation of angular heads also enables lateral machining. For a tilting spindle and an NC rotary table AXA offers the VPC U machines; the VPC 40 U has a B-axis head with a 90° swivelling range.

03 How does the VPC 40 differ from the VPC 45?

The VPC 45 is the taller and wider version: 800 mm of Z and 1,400 mm of Y as standard, with Y options up to 2,200 mm, and 2,000 kg per table. The VPC 40 has 500 mm of Z, 1,200 mm of Y and 1,500 kg per table. Both use the same SK 40 drives.

04 What accuracy does AXA state for the VPC 40?

Positioning accuracy is ± 0.015 mm per 1,000 mm per axis, with ± 0.008 mm as an optional feature. Repeating accuracy is ± 0.01 mm, optionally ± 0.006 mm. Direct measuring systems are fitted on the X, Y and Z axes.
