Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer MB-14R that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer MB-14R is an open bed mill that Fryer positions for both single and multi part production: 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm) of travel, a rigid CAT 40 spindle head and a carousel tool changer for 12 or 20 tools. It is the 40 in (1,016 mm) member of the MB-R series and weighs 7,000 lb (3,175 kg), against 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) for the quill-head MB-14Q on the same travels.
For small-lot work the open table is the attraction. The table is 16 x 54 in (406 x 1,372 mm) and travels out past the base, so long stock, plates hanging over the ends and awkward weldments can be clamped without fighting an enclosure. A splash guard and a full machine guard are separate options. Table load is 2,450 lb (1,111 kg).
The spindle is built for speed rather than torque. It runs 60 - 8,000 rpm with 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak and a maximum torque of 40 ft-lb (54 Nm), so the sensible tooling is end mills, small face mills and drills in the sizes a job shop uses daily. Clearance under the spindle is 25 to 5 in (635 - 127 mm).
Feed rates define the cycle times. Rapid traverse is 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) and the cutting feed rate tops out at 300 ipm (7.6 m/min), with a 7 seconds tool change. Those figures suit batches of tens, not thousands. Programming is done with menus at the control or with G and M code programs from CAD-CAM, and rigid tapping with a peck feature is among the listed features.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Open-table bed mill with 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm) of travel
- 60 - 8,000 rpm rigid CAT 40 spindle, 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak
- Carousel tool changer for 12 tools, or 20 as an option
- 7,000 lb (3,175 kg) machine weight, heavier than the 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) MB-14Q
- Menu programming with solid model part verification, plus standard G and M codes
Limitations
- Cutting feed rate is limited to 300 ipm (7.6 m/min)
- 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) of maximum torque rules out large drills and heavy face milling
- Guarding is optional, so coolant and chips are not contained on the base machine
- Spindle nose cannot come closer than 5 in (127 mm) to the table

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A rigid CAT 40 spindle head, 60 - 8,000 rpm, with a 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak motor and 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) of maximum torque. BT-40 is optional. The distance from spindle nose to table ranges from 25 in to 5 in (635 - 127 mm) and the spindle centre is 20 in (508 mm) from the column.
02
Fryer's table gives a tool storage capacity of 12 with 20 optional, bi-directional tool selection and a 7 seconds tool change. The options sheet describes both as Geneva drive carousel type changers. Maximum tool length is 11.8 in (300 mm) and maximum tool weight 15.4 lb.
03
For small lots. Fryer says the machine is capable of single or multi part production, and the tool changer makes multi-tool cycles possible. With 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) rapids and a 300 ipm (7.6 m/min) cutting feed limit it is slower than Fryer's enclosed machining centers such as the MC-40B, whose cutting feed rate goes up to 900 ipm (22.9 m/min).

Operating dimensions are 113 x 80 x 106 in (2,870 x 2,032 x 2,692 mm). The supply is 35 A at 208-250 VAC, 3 phase, with 380-500 VAC shown in brackets as the alternative. Air is 3 cfm (85 L/min) at 85 psi (5.9 bar).
