Overview

The Haas VF-8/40 is the wide-table 40-taper machine in the 64 in class: 64 × 40 × 30 in (1,626 × 1,016 × 762 mm) of travel over a 64 × 36 in (1,626 × 914 mm) table with seven T-slots. The VF-6/40 shares the X and Z travel but stops at 32 in (813 mm) of Y on a 64 × 28 in (1,626 × 711 mm) table. If the parts are plates, mould bases or fixture layouts that run deep front to back, the extra Y is the whole case for this model.

Nothing changes at the spindle. It is an inline direct-drive unit turning 8,100 rpm, rated 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, in CT40, BT40 or HSK-A63. Haas's table also carries a figure for an optional gearbox, 250 ft-lbf (339 N·m) at 450 rpm, which is the thing to ask about if large drills and face mills in steel are part of the plan. Without it, the spindle is better matched to moderate cuts than to hogging.
