Overview
The Brother Speedio S500Xd2 is the mid-range workhorse in the Speedio compact VMC lineup, stepping up from the S300Xd2 with 500 x 400 mm (19.7 x 15.7 in) X/Y travels while retaining the sub-second tool change and high rapid traverse that define the Speedio platform.
The spindle delivers 16,000 rpm with a 7.5 kW (10 hp) motor on BT30 taper. The 21-position turret magazine maintains that 0.9-second chip-to-chip time. Rapid traverse hits 50 m/min on X/Y and 56 m/min on Z. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.003 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.002 mm.
The table supports 200 kg (441 lb), double the S300Xd2. Machine weight is approximately 3,200 kg (7,055 lb) with a 1,650 x 2,340 mm footprint. The S500Xd2 is the most commonly automated Speedio model.
The S500Xd2 directly competes with the Fanuc Robodrill Alpha-D21MiB5. Brother wins on tool change speed; the Robodrill wins on spindle flexibility and tool count.
New pricing runs $100,000-$150,000. Used 2017-2022 trade $50,000-$90,000. The S500Xd2 is the sweet spot for shops needing more travel than the S300Xd2 without the full 700mm of the S700Xd2.
Brother designed the Speedio line for automation, and the S500Xd2 footprint fits comfortably in multi-machine cells with robotic loading.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 500 mm X-travel handles wider parts while retaining sub-second tool changes
- 7.5 kW spindle provides more cutting authority than S300Xd2
- 200 kg table capacity supports heavier fixtures
- Same 0.9-second turret tool change keeps non-cutting time minimal
- Most commonly automated Speedio with wide integrator support
- CNC-C00 control maintains surface quality at high feed rates
Limitations
- BT30 spindle still limits heavy cutting vs BT40 machines
- 21-tool turret is fixed with no expansion
- Brother service varies by region vs Haas or Mazak
- Z-axis 305 mm identical to smaller S300Xd2
- Proprietary CNC-C00 has learning curve for Fanuc operators

New $100,000-$150,000. Used 2017-2022 trade $50,000-$90,000.
02
200mm more X-travel, 7.5 vs 6 kW spindle, double table capacity. Same tool change speed.
03
BT30. Fast changes but limits heavy cutting vs BT40.
04
Handles mild steel but BT30 limits depth of cut. Use BT40 for heavy steel.
05
Yes. Most commonly automated compact VMC with many standard cell configs.
