Overview

The Haas DT-3 is the big brother in Haas's drill/tap mill lineup, stretching X-axis travel to 914 mm (36 in) while keeping the same compact footprint as the DT-2. If you're running multiple fixtures, long extrusions, or just need more room across the table, the DT-3 gives you 203 mm (8 in) of extra X travel without eating more floor space.

Under the hood, it runs a BT30 taper inline direct-drive spindle at 10,000 RPM with 11.2 kW (15 hp) and 62 Nm (46 ft-lbf) of torque at 1,700 RPM. That's purpose-built for high-speed drilling, tapping, and light milling in aluminum, brass, and mild steel. The BT30 taper keeps tool costs low and tool changes fast. Speaking of fast, the 20+1 side-mount tool changer posts 1.75-second tool-to-tool and 2.0-second chip-to-chip averages. Those numbers are competitive with anything in this class.

Rapid traverse rates hit 61.0 m/min (2,400 ipm) on all three axes, which is where the DT series earns its keep. Non-cutting time is the enemy in high-volume production, and the DT-3 minimizes it. Max cutting feedrate is 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm), and rigid tapping runs up to 5,000 RPM.

The table measures 965 x 381 mm (38 x 15 in) with three T-slots on 125 mm centers. Table load capacity is 113 kg (250 lb) at full rapids or 181 kg (400 lb) at half rapids. That's light compared to 40-taper machines, but this isn't a heavy hogging platform. It's a parts-per-hour machine.

Haas runs the DT-3 on their Next Generation Control with the same interface across every Haas machine. At a base price around $76K, the DT-3 slots between the DT-2 and the DM series. Shops already pushing DT-2 capacity on longer parts should look here first. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 914 mm (36 in) of X-axis travel in a compact footprint matches or exceeds many full-size 40-taper VMCs
  • 2,400 ipm rapids on all axes and 2.0-second chip-to-chip times make it one of the fastest machines in its class
  • BT30 taper keeps tooling costs significantly lower than CT40 or HSK setups
  • 20+1 SMTC side-mount tool changer is faster and more reliable than carousel-type changers
  • Rigid tapping to 5,000 RPM handles M2 through M12 threads without a tapping head
  • Same NGC control interface as every other Haas, so operators move between machines with zero retraining

Limitations

  • BT30 taper limits tool rigidity and pull force for heavy cuts in steel or stainless
  • Table load capacity of 181 kg (400 lb) at half rapids rules out heavy fixtures and 4th-axis tombstone setups
  • 15 hp spindle won't keep up with aggressive roughing that 30 hp 40-taper machines handle easily
  • Air-cooled spindle can limit sustained high-speed running compared to liquid-cooled alternatives
  • 10,000 RPM max is adequate but falls short of 15K+ RPM spindles on dedicated high-speed machines
05

Best For

High-volume aluminum production shops running automotive, electronics, or aerospace components Shops needing longer X travel than the DT-2 without a bigger machine footprint Drill-and-tap intensive work with M2-M12 threads in aluminum and mild steel Multi-fixture setups exploiting the 36-inch X travel for two or three vise stations Extrusion machining and long parts that won't fit on the DT-2's shorter table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What's the difference between the Haas DT-3 and DT-2?

The DT-3 adds 203 mm (8 in) of X-axis travel over the DT-2, going from 711 mm to 914 mm, with a longer 965 mm table. It maintains the same spindle, rapids, and footprint. If your parts or fixtures need more than 28 inches of X travel, the DT-3 is the logical step up.

02 Can the DT-3 cut steel?

It can cut mild steel and even 4140 for light operations like drilling, tapping, and finish milling. But the BT30 taper and 15 hp spindle aren't built for aggressive steel roughing. For steel-heavy work, consider the DM-1 or DM-2 with their 40-taper spindles.

03 What does a new Haas DT-3 cost?

Base price is around $76,000. Adding through-spindle coolant, probing, and common options typically brings the total to $85,000-$95,000. Used DT-3s are less common than DT-2s on the secondary market.

04 How does the DT-3 compare to the DM-2?

The DM-2 uses a 40-taper spindle with the same 15 hp and 10K RPM, giving it more tool rigidity and pull force. The DT-3 has faster rapids (2,400 vs 2,400 ipm) and the same X travel (36 vs 28 in for the DM-2). Choose the DT-3 for pure speed in aluminum, the DM-2 for versatility across materials.

05 Does the DT-3 run on single-phase power?

No, the DT-3 requires 3-phase power: 220 VAC at 40 amps or 440 VAC at 20 amps. Unlike the TM series, there's no single-phase option.
