Overview

The Akira Seiki PC460 is the smallest of the maker's PC tapping centers, a BT30 machine weighing 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) on a 1,200 x 2,300 mm (47.24 x 90.55 in) footprint. Travels are 460 mm (18.11 in) in X, 320 mm (12.6 in) in Y and 300 mm (11.81 in) in Z.

Tapping centers are judged on what happens between cuts, and Akira Seiki says as much about the PC series: small jobs with a high share of non-cutting time. Here all three axes rapid at 60 / 60 / 60 m/min (2,362 / 2,362 / 2,362 ipm), and the servo tool changer goes tool to tool in 1.7 s and chip to chip in 2.0 s.

The spindle is air cooled, 9 HP (6.7 kW) peak, with 12,000 rpm as the listed speed and 24,000 rpm as an option. That is the right scale for drilling, tapping and light milling in aluminium and die castings. It is not a machine for face milling steel.

The 520 x 320 mm (20.47 x 12.6 in) table carries 250 kg (551.26 lb). The servo magazine holds 21T, with tools up to 80 mm (3.15 in) in diameter, 150 mm (5.9 in) long and 3 kg (6.61 lb). Coolant capacity is 100 L (26.42 gal), and the machine needs 15 kVA and 0.5 MPa (72.5 psi) air.
