Overview
The DN Solutions NX 6500 II is the large-format die and mold VMC in the NX series, stepping up from the NX 5500 II with wider X-axis travel and a larger table while retaining the same defining symmetrical double-column (bridge) architecture. Where the NX 5500 II handles medium mold bases, the NX 6500 II targets the heavy end of die and mold production: large automotive stamping dies, sizable injection mold cavities, and complex die casting dies for aluminum and zinc components.
Axis travels expand to 1,300 x 650 x 500 mm (51 x 26 x 20 in), and the table grows to 1,500 x 700 mm (59 x 28 in) with a 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) load capacity. That 3-ton table load is the headline number — it allows the NX 6500 II to support mold bases and die sets that would exceed the limits of conventional C-frame VMCs in this travel class. The bridge structure carries these loads with the same asymmetry-free stiffness that characterizes the NX 5500 II.
The spindle specification is essentially identical to the NX 5500 II: BT 40 taper, 22 kW (30 hp), 143 Nm (105 ft-lb) torque, 15,000 RPM standard with a 20,000 RPM option available. The high-speed spindle is critical for smooth mold finishing using small-diameter ball nose end mills at high surface speeds. The combination of heavy table load (for support) and high spindle speed (for finish quality) defines the NX series approach to mold work.
At 17,000 kg (37,479 lb), the NX 6500 II adds another 3,000 kg over the NX 5500 II, and that extra mass reinforces the damping and rigidity that makes the bridge design effective. Rapid traverse rates of 36/36/30 m/min match the NX 5500 II. The oversized guideways (45 mm rollers) and 50 mm Z-axis ball screw are carried over, maintaining the stiffness characteristics throughout the larger machine. FANUC 0i-MF Plus is standard with Siemens 828D as an option, both supporting high-speed surface machining cycles with look-ahead and nano-level interpolation for smooth mold surfaces.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 3,000 kg table load capacity handles large automotive die sets and injection mold bases that exceed the limits of conventional C-frame VMCs
- Symmetrical bridge structure eliminates column asymmetry and delivers consistent volumetric accuracy across the full 1,300 x 650 mm work envelope
- 17,000 kg machine mass provides industry-leading vibration damping for die and mold work at this scale, reducing surface roughness in finishing passes
- 15,000-20,000 RPM BT 40 spindle covers aggressive pre-hardening roughing and fine hardened finishing in a single machine platform
- Large table size (1,500 x 700 mm) with heavy load rating allows machining of large automotive stamping die sections without repositioning
Limitations
- 17,000 kg machine weight and 4.0 x 3.4 m footprint demand significant floor space, a reinforced concrete foundation, and heavy rigging during installation
- Price range of $350,000-$520,000 is a major capital commitment — requires high-value mold work to justify the investment
- BT 40 taper remains the limiting factor for the absolute heaviest roughing in thick sections of tool steel where HSK-A63 or CAT 50 would excel
- Highly specialized machine profile makes it a poor fit for general-purpose job shop VMC work — dedicated mold shops are the natural customer
- Larger travels mean longer positioning times on smaller mold inserts — a machine this size is most efficient when working parts that use most of the table

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New NX 6500 II machines typically price between $350,000 and $520,000 depending on spindle speed option, ATC size, high-pressure coolant, probing, and thermal compensation options. Base machines start around $350,000-$390,000. Fully configured machines with 20,000 RPM spindle, 60-tool ATC, and complete accessory packages reach $480,000-$520,000.
02
The NX 6500 II has more X-travel (1,300 vs 1,050 mm), more Y-travel (650 vs 550 mm), a larger table (1,500 x 700 vs 1,200 x 600 mm), and a higher table load capacity (3,000 vs 2,000 kg). The NX 6500 II also weighs 3,000 kg more (17,000 vs 14,000 kg). The spindle specification is the same. Choose the NX 6500 II for large automotive-scale tooling; the NX 5500 II for medium mold work where the smaller table is sufficient.
03
Yes. The combination of bridge structure rigidity, 17,000 kg machine mass, and 15,000-20,000 RPM spindle makes the NX 6500 II suitable for hard milling in fully hardened H13, D2, and M2 tool steel. Common applications include finishing EDM pre-roughed cavities with ball nose end mills, producing mirror finishes in polishable mold steels, and machining hard insert pockets in die casting tools.
04
They target different market segments. The Mazak Variaxis j-1050 is a 5-axis trunnion machine optimized for complex multi-surface machining, while the NX 6500 II is a 3-axis bridge VMC optimized for heavy die and mold work. The NX 6500 II has a much higher table load capacity (3,000 vs ~800 kg), larger table surface, and bridge rigidity suited to heavy mold bases. The Variaxis is the better choice for 5-axis contouring; the NX 6500 II for die and mold precision work.
05
At 17,000 kg, the NX 6500 II requires a reinforced concrete foundation — typically 350-450 mm thick reinforced slab. DN Solutions provides foundation drawings specifying loading points, anchor bolt positions, and concrete strength requirements. Most standard industrial floors (150-200 mm slab) will require reinforcement or a dedicated equipment pad. Budget 4-6 weeks for foundation work before machine delivery.
