We do not have a price for the AWEA HD-2012 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Torque defines the AWEA HD-2012. Its gear spindle delivers a maximum of 662 Nm at 387 rpm from a 26 kW motor through a 2-step gearbox, and tops out at 6,000 rpm. The machine is a bridge type machining center with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of X travel, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y, 760 mm (29.9 in) of Z and a BT50 taper.
AWEA built the HD series for roughing, and the guide way choice shows it. X and Y ride on roller type linear guide ways, but Z uses box ways, which the maker describes as heat treated and ground for heavy-duty cutting. Hydraulic counter balance cylinders sit symmetrically in the head alongside the spindle, motor and ball screw. The X axis is driven by a Fanuc α30 servo motor, and AWEA states the ball screws on all axes are a size larger than usual.
Set beside the VP-2012, which shares its travels and its 2,000 x 1,100 mm (78.7 x 43.3 in) table, the HD-2012 is the heavier build throughout. Table load is 4,500 kg (9,921 lb), where the VP-2012 is rated at 3,500 kg (7,716 lb). Machine weight is 18,500 kg (40,785 lb), and the VP-2012 comes in at 16,000 kg (35,273 lb). The spindle motor is rated 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) against the 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) of the VP-2012, and the electrical supply rises to 50 kVA.
There is a cost in speed. Z rapid is 15 m/min (591 ipm) and cutting feed is limited to 10 m/min (394 ipm), both lower than on the VP-2012. X and Y still traverse at 24 m/min (945 ipm). Positioning accuracy is listed as A ≤ 0.012 mm with repeatability R ≤ 0.008 mm.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Gear spindle with 662 Nm of maximum torque at 387 rpm, per AWEA
- Box ways on Z combined with roller type linear guide ways on X and Y
- 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) table load on a 2,000 x 1,100 mm (78.7 x 43.3 in) table
- Accepts tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 15 kg (33 lb)
- Magazine options extend to 60 T; 32 is standard
- One-piece bridge and base castings with hand scraped contact surfaces
Limitations
- Spindle speed ends at 6,000 rpm; the VP-2012HS reaches 10,000 rpm
- Z rapid of 15 m/min (591 ipm), slower than the 20 m/min (787 ipm) of the VP-2012
- Requires 50 kVA, more than the 40 kVA of the VP-2012
- BBT50 dual contact taper is an option here, with plain BT50 as standard
- Adoptive feed control and spindle thermal compensation are listed as options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
AWEA states a maximum torque output of 662 Nm at 387 rpm from the 6,000 rpm spindle with its 26 kW motor. The drive is a 2-step gearbox, so the low range supplies torque for large cutters and the high range carries the spindle to its top speed. The specification table rates the motor at 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp).
02
AWEA's description assigns roller type linear guide ways to X and Y for rigidity with precision, and box ways to Z, calling them best suited to heavy-duty cutting. Z is the axis that takes the thrust of drilling and the reaction of a face mill, so that is where the maker put the sliding contact. The Z rapid is 15 m/min (591 ipm).
03
The maker claims up to 20% more structural rigidity for the bridge and base. It also states that the contact area between column and bed is up to 42% larger and the column cross section 24% larger. These are AWEA's own comparisons with its earlier design, published without test conditions for the rigidity figure.
04
It depends on the stage. The HD-2012 is the roughing machine: 6,000 rpm through a gearbox, box ways on Z and a 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) table. The VP-2012HS finishes faster with a direct-driven 10,000 rpm spindle and a 12 m/min (472 ipm) cutting feed, against 10 m/min (394 ipm) here. Travels match on all three axes.
05
AWEA describes a tool loading monitor that watches each tool setting and detects breakage. Adoptive feed control, which adjusts feed rate from spindle load, appears in the option list together with spindle thermal compensation. An automatic tool length measurement screen handling up to 12 tool length measurements is marked Opt. as well.
