Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hartford MCW-14550 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Hartford's MCW-14550 covers 14,000 mm (551.2 in) in X and 5,500 mm (216.5 in) in Y above a fixed table of 14,000 x 4,000 mm (551.2 x 157.5 in). It belongs to the MCW series of moving-column machining centers with a vertically travelling cross-beam.
What cuts the metal is a #50 spindle that Hartford makes itself and states will hold run-out within 5 μm. There are two types. The gear head runs 6,000 or 8,000 rpm and is the choice for steel and cast iron with large face mills and boring tools. The i-Tech hybrid spindle reaches 10,000 rpm and suits lighter cuts with smaller tools, for example on aluminium structures. Either way the motor is 18.5 / 22 kW, or 30 / 35 kW as an option.
On a fourteen-metre part a single finishing pass can take hours, and a great many tools may be needed along the way. The chain type magazine holds 40, optionally 62.
Other figures are common to the series: table load 3,000 kg/m², Z travel 1,000 mm with options of 1,200 and 1,400 mm, W travel 1,800 mm or 2,100 mm. The Z axis runs on four linear guideways and is balanced by a nitrogen accumulator system.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Self-made #50 spindle with stated run-out within 5 μm
- Choice of gear head (6,000 / 8,000 rpm) or i-Tech hybrid spindle (10,000 rpm)
- 14,000 mm (551.2 in) of X travel
- Chain type magazine for 40 or 62 tools
Limitations
- No spindle torque figures in Hartford's table for this model
- 10,000 rpm is the ceiling, which is slow for small finishing tools
- 4,000 mm table width; the MCW-14650 offers 5,000 mm (196.9 in)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The gear head at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm for heavy cuts in steel and iron, the i-Tech hybrid at 10,000 rpm for lighter, faster work. Both are #50 and Hartford states run-out within 5 μm for its self-made spindle.
02
14,000 mm (551.2 in) in X and 5,500 mm (216.5 in) in Y. The fixed table is 14,000 x 4,000 mm (551.2 x 157.5 in) and rated at 3,000 kg/m².
03
40 tools as standard and 62 as an option, in a chain type magazine. The shank is BT-50, with CAT50, DIN and BBT50 listed as alternatives.
