Overview
The Mazak VCC-2000 is a large-format vertical machining center designed for machining of oversized workpieces that exceed the capacity of standard box-column VMC designs. The VCC designation reflects a traveling-column or bridge-type structural configuration that enables very large X-axis travels while maintaining structural rigidity β a design philosophy that separates large-format VMCs from conventional knee-and-column machines that become impractically large at the VCC-2000 scale.
The VCC-2000 provides axis travels of 2,000 x 1,000 x 700 mm (78.7 x 39.4 x 27.6 in) on X, Y, and Z respectively, accommodating workpieces up to 2,000 mm (78.7 in) in length at a table load of 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The 2,000 mm X-axis travel is the machine's defining characteristic, enabling single-setup machining of long prismatic workpieces β aerospace wing ribs, defense structure panels, automotive die sets, and large energy components β that would otherwise require multiple setups or larger machining centers.
The standard spindle delivers 22 kW (30 hp) through a CAT 50 taper at 6,000 RPM, prioritizing torque for heavy cutting in steel and cast iron. An optional 15,000 RPM high-speed spindle is available for aluminum and non-ferrous alloys. The table is a fixed-bed design with T-slots for versatile workholding. The standard ATC holds 40 tools with expansion to 80 tools. Through-spindle coolant (TSC) is available for deep hole drilling and high-feed milling applications.
The VCC-2000 runs on MAZATROL SmoothG control and competes with the Okuma MB-10000H, the Makino KE series, and the DMG Mori DMF 360 in the large-format VMC segment. Pricing for new machines runs $500,000 to $800,000 depending on spindle, ATC size, and TSC options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2,000 mm X-axis travel enables single-setup machining of long aerospace, defense, and energy workpieces that would require multiple setups or repositioning on standard VMCs
- 3,000 kg table load capacity handles heavy mold sets, die bases, and large structural castings without exceeding table limits
- Traveling-column structural design provides superior rigidity at 2,000 mm X-travel compared to conventional box-column VMCs that would flex at this scale
- CAT 50 spindle delivers high torque for heavy roughing in steel, cast iron, and titanium on large workpieces where material removal volume is significant
Limitations
- 6,000 RPM standard spindle is slow for aluminum and non-ferrous alloys where high surface speeds improve productivity; the optional 15,000 RPM spindle adds significant cost
- 30,000 kg machine weight requires engineered foundations and imposes significant facility planning requirements before delivery
- 700 mm Z-axis travel may be limiting for tall workpieces or deep pocketing operations; shops with very tall parts may need a portal-type machining center instead

Frequently Asked Questions
01
In a conventional VMC, the spindle head moves in X and Y while the table moves in a third axis. At large scales (over 1,500 mm X-travel), moving a large, heavy table becomes impractical, so large-format VMCs use a traveling column design where the column and spindle move along the X-axis while the table remains stationary. This enables very large X-axis travels with better structural rigidity and simpler workpiece fixturing since the table does not move during machining.
02
The VCC-2000 can machine workpieces up to 2,000 mm in length (X-axis), 1,000 mm in width (Y-axis), and 700 mm in height (Z-axis clearance), with a maximum weight of 3,000 kg. In practice, workpiece height is limited to the Z-axis travel minus the tool length -- typically 500-600 mm maximum practical part height for most programs.
03
With the optional 15,000 RPM high-speed spindle, yes. Aerospace aluminum machining typically requires 10,000-20,000 RPM for optimal surface finish and material removal rates with carbide tooling. The standard 6,000 RPM CAT 50 spindle is more optimized for steel and cast iron roughing. Shops primarily machining aerospace aluminum should specify the high-speed spindle option at time of order.
04
A gantry machining center uses a fixed bridge over a moving table and offers superior rigidity for very large, very heavy workpieces (often 5,000-50,000 kg). The VCC-2000 is a more economical alternative for long but lighter workpieces (up to 3,000 kg) where gantry machine cost is not justified. If your parts consistently exceed 3,000 kg or require more than 2,000 mm in multiple axes simultaneously, a gantry machine is the more appropriate choice.
05
At 30,000 kg, the VCC-2000 requires an engineered foundation. Mazak provides a site preparation document with specific load distribution requirements. Most installations require a reinforced concrete pad with leveling pads and vibration isolation. Budget $30,000-$80,000 for site preparation depending on existing slab conditions.
