Overview
The Mazak VCE-700 is a large-table vertical machining center designed for high-speed machining of sizable workpieces in job shop and production environments. With a generous work envelope and powerful spindle, the VCE-700 bridges the gap between mid-size VMCs and full-size bridge mills, handling large aerospace panels, mold bases, fixture plates, and structural components that smaller machines cannot accommodate.
The spindle delivers 18.5 kW (25 hp) at 12,000 RPM through a CAT 40 taper (BT 40 available), providing strong metal removal rates across steel, aluminum, and cast iron. A 15,000 RPM or 20,000 RPM high-speed spindle option is available for aluminum-intensive aerospace and automotive work. Through-spindle coolant at 20 bar standard (70 bar optional) supports deep-hole drilling and aggressive chip evacuation.
Axis travels span 1,270 mm (50 in) on X, 700 mm (27.6 in) on Y, and 560 mm (22 in) on Z. The hardened and ground box-way construction provides the rigidity needed for heavy cutting in steel and cast iron, while rapids of 36 m/min keep non-cutting time short. The 1,400 x 700 mm (55.1 x 27.6 in) table supports workpieces up to 1,500 kg (3,307 lb).
The standard 30-tool ATC expands to 48 or 60 tools for complex multi-feature parts. Current production ships with the MAZATROL SmoothG CNC. The machine weighs approximately 8,500 kg (18,739 lb) with a footprint of roughly 3.6 x 2.8 meters. Competitors include the Haas VF-7, Okuma Genos M660-V, DMG Mori CMX 110 U, and Doosan DNM 750. New machines price between $160,000 and $260,000, with used units from 2014-2021 trading between $70,000 and $180,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,270 mm X-travel and 1,400 x 700 mm table handle large workpieces that mid-size VMCs cannot accommodate, expanding the machine's part range significantly
- Box-way construction provides superior rigidity and damping for heavy cuts in steel and cast iron, outperforming linear guide machines in interrupted cutting conditions
- MAZATROL SmoothG conversational programming reduces setup time compared to pure G-code machines, especially valuable in job shop environments with frequent changeovers
- 12,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle with 18.5 kW delivers strong metal removal in steel while optional high-speed spindles serve aluminum-intensive aerospace work
- 1,500 kg table load capacity supports heavy mold bases, large fixture plates, and multiple-part fixturing for production runs
- Competitive pricing against comparable large VMCs from Haas, Okuma, and DMG Mori while offering Mazak's proven reliability and North American service network
Limitations
- Box-way design results in slower rapids (36 m/min) compared to linear guide VMCs achieving 48-60 m/min, adding non-cutting time on parts with many tool changes and repositioning moves
- CAT 40 spindle taper limits rigidity for the heaviest roughing operations — shops running large face mills and heavy boring may prefer CAT 50 machines in this size class
- 8,500 kg weight and 3.6 x 2.8 meter footprint require planning for floor loading and crane access during installation
- 30-tool standard magazine may be limiting for complex multi-feature mold work — the 48 or 60-tool upgrade adds $8,000-$15,000
- No built-in 4th-axis or rotary table integration from factory — adding a rotary table reduces effective Y-travel and requires careful fixturing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base VCE-700 configurations start around $160,000. Production-ready setups with high-speed spindle, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, expanded tool magazine, probing package, and chip conveyor typically run $210,000-$260,000. Used VCE-700 machines from 2014-2021 trade between $70,000 and $180,000 depending on hours, spindle condition, and installed options.
02
Both offer 50-inch X-travel in a similar footprint. The Mazak features box-way construction versus the Haas inline direct-drive system, providing better rigidity for heavy cutting. The MAZATROL control offers conversational programming advantages over Haas's Next Generation Control. The Haas VF-7 is priced lower (starting around $120,000) and has a larger North American installed base. The Mazak commands a premium for its build quality and control sophistication.
03
Box ways excel at heavy cutting, interrupted cuts, and surface finish in steel and cast iron. Linear guides offer faster rapids and acceleration, benefiting high-speed aluminum machining with many repositioning moves. The VCE-700's box-way design is ideal for job shops doing a mix of steel and aluminum. For primarily high-speed aluminum aerospace work, consider a linear guide alternative.
04
Yes. The table accommodates standard trunnion-style and direct-mount rotary tables from Nikken, Tsudakoma, and other suppliers. The SmoothG control supports 4th-axis programming. Popular options include a 250 mm or 320 mm rotary table for indexed or continuous 4th-axis work. Be aware that a rotary table reduces effective Y-travel, so plan fixturing accordingly.
