Overview

The Hartford SW-426 carries 13,500 kg (29,762 lb) on a 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) table. It is a box-guideway double-column machining center with 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel and 2,600 mm (102.4 in) of Y.

Hartford's page for this model puts the emphasis on three things under one heading: its gibs, its self-made gear-driven spindle head and the use of angular heads. The gibs deserve a word. A box way is adjusted for clearance by a tapered gib, and on the SW machines that gib is lubricated directly, with double gibs on X and Y. Direct feed keeps oil at the sliding face and off the outside of the casting, which protects the Turcite-B lining from running dry.

The gear head is listed at 4,000 / 6,000 rpm. A #50 DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm is the alternative for finishing. Motors run from 15/18.5 kW through 18.5/22 kW and 22/26 kW to 30/37 kW (Cont. / 30 min).

Z travel is 780 mm, with 1,070 mm as the option. The tool changer is either an S type, listed as S: 20, or an arm type with 32 tools, or 40. The shank is BT-50; BBT-50, CAT-50 and DIN69871A are alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the capacity of the Hartford SW-426?

The table is 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) with an average load of 13,500 kg (29,762 lb). Travels are 4,000 mm (157.5 in) in X, 2,600 mm (102.4 in) in Y and 780 mm in Z, or 1,070 mm optionally.

02 How are the box ways of the SW-426 lubricated?

Through the taper gibs. Hartford states that taper gib lubrication prevents oil leaking from the contact surface between casting and gibs and avoids lubrication failure on the Turcite-B, and that double gibs on the X and Y axis improve machining accuracy.

03 What spindle options does the SW-426 have?

A #50 gear spindle at 4,000 / 6,000 rpm or a #50 DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm. The motor is 15/18.5 kW with 18.5/22 kW, 22/26 kW and 30/37 kW as options.

04 SW-426 or SW-423?

The SW-423 has a 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) table, 2,300 mm (90.6 in) of Y travel and a 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) load. The SW-426 is wider and carries more; spindles and motors are the same.
