Overview

The Hartford MCW-12650 is a moving-column, moving-crossbeam machining center with 12,000 mm (472.4 in) of X travel and 6,500 mm (255.9 in) of Y. Its fixed table is 12,000 x 5,000 mm (472.4 x 196.9 in).

Moving two columns in step along twelve metres is the hard part of the design, and Hartford's answer is an X axis with twin servo motors and twin reducers. The maker states that backlash is reduced so as to ensure accuracy of 0.01 mm. A second pair of drives works the W axis: twin ballscrews and twin servo motors raise and lower the cross-beam, with a stated positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm.

Under the gantry the columns stand on bases that Hartford has widened to 1,250 mm to reduce cutting vibration. For a machine with 6,500 mm between its guideways, the stiffness of that base is what the surface finish at mid-span depends on.

Capacity in brief: table load 3,000 kg/m², Z travel 1,000 mm (1,200 / 1,400 mm optional), W travel 1,800 mm (2,100 mm optional), #50 spindle at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm as a gear head and 10,000 rpm as a hybrid, 40 or 62 tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What accuracy does Hartford state for the MCW-12650?

Two figures appear in the description: X-axis backlash reduced to ensure accuracy of 0.01 mm, through twin servo motors and twin reducers, and a W-axis positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm. No positioning accuracy for X, Y or Z is given in the spec table.

02 What size is the MCW-12650 table?

12,000 x 5,000 mm (472.4 x 196.9 in), fixed, rated at 3,000 kg/m². X travel is 12,000 mm and Y travel 6,500 mm (255.9 in).

03 How does the MCW-12650 differ from the MCW-12550?

The MCW-12550 has a 12,000 x 4,000 mm (472.4 x 157.5 in) table with 5,500 mm (216.5 in) of Y travel. The MCW-12650 is the wider cross section. Z, W, spindle and magazine figures are the same.

04 How many tools does the MCW-12650 carry?

40 in the standard chain type magazine, with 62 as the option. Shanks are BT-50, or CAT50, DIN or BBT50, for the #50 spindle.
