Overview

The Milltronics TRM3016 is a small 40-taper vertical machining center with 30 x 16 x 20 in (762 x 406 x 508 mm) travels, a 16-tool carousel changer and an 8,000 rpm BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle. At 6,835 lb (3,100 kg) on a nominal operating footprint of 87.9 x 89.2 in (2,233 x 2,266 mm), it is a lighter machine than the VM3018, which weighs 9,000 lb (4,082 kg).

The table measures 35.4 x 16 in (899 x 406 mm) with 0.71 in (18 mm) T-slots and carries 992 lb (450 kg). That load figure is the main thing separating it from the VM3018, whose 34 x 18 in (864 x 457 mm) table is rated for 3,770 lb (1,710 kg). Add up vises, fixture plates and stock before assuming a job fits.

Spindle power is listed as 15/10 hp (11.2/7.5 kW) with 67 lb-ft (91 Nm) of torque. Speed, power and torque all sit below the VM3018 at 10,000 rpm, 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW) and 75 lb-ft (102 Nm). Rapids are 700 ipm (17.8 m/min). These are figures for one-off parts, fixtures and short runs, where setup time counts for more than seconds per part.

The carousel holds 16 CT40 tools on MAS 60 retention knobs. Individual tools can be up to 4 in (102 mm) in diameter and 11 in (279 mm) long, both larger than the 3.15 in (80 mm) and 9.45 in (240 mm) limits of the VM3018, but only 10 lb (5 kg) in weight. Spindle nose to table distance is 4-24 in (102-610 mm).

The control is the Milltronics 9000-DGI CNC. The machine stands 111.3 in (2,827 mm) high and needs 18 kVA / 21 A at 480 V, 3-phase.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Compact and light: 6,835 lb (3,100 kg) on an 87.9 x 89.2 in (2,233 x 2,266 mm) nominal operating footprint
  • 30 x 16 x 20 in (762 x 406 x 508 mm) travels with a 35.4 x 16 in (899 x 406 mm) table
  • Carousel accepts tools up to 4 in (102 mm) in diameter and 11 in (279 mm) long
  • Modest electrical demand of 18 kVA / 21 A at 480 V, 3-phase
  • BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle with the Milltronics 9000-DGI CNC

Limitations

  • Table load is 992 lb (450 kg), roughly a quarter of the 3,770 lb (1,710 kg) VM3018 rating
  • 16 tools in a carousel, where the VM3018 has a 24-tool double-arm changer
  • 8,000 rpm and 67 lb-ft (91 Nm) limit both small-tool speed and heavy roughing
  • Tool weight is capped at 10 lb (5 kg) and rapids at 700 ipm (17.8 m/min)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the TRM3016?

Travels are 30 in (762 mm) in X, 16 in (406 mm) in Y and 20 in (508 mm) in Z. The table is 35.4 x 16 in (899 x 406 mm) with 0.71 in (18 mm) T-slots and a load limit of 992 lb (450 kg). Spindle nose to table distance is 4-24 in (102-610 mm).

02 What tool changer does the TRM3016 have?

A 16-tool carousel for CT40 holders with MAS 60 retention knobs. Tools can be up to 4 in (102 mm) in diameter, 11 in (279 mm) long and 10 lb (5 kg). The weight limit is the one to watch with large-diameter cutters.

03 How does the TRM3016 compare with the VM3018?

Both have 30 in (762 mm) of X travel and the BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 taper. The VM3018 is the heavier machine: 10,000 rpm, 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW), 75 lb-ft (102 Nm), a 24-tool double-arm changer, 3,770 lb (1,710 kg) of table load and a weight of 9,000 lb (4,082 kg). The TRM3016 runs 8,000 rpm, 15/10 hp (11.2/7.5 kW) and 67 lb-ft (91 Nm) with 16 tools and a 992 lb (450 kg) table load.

04 What power does the TRM3016 need?

Milltronics lists 18 kVA / 21 A at 480 V, 3-phase. The machine is 111.3 in (2,827 mm) high, so check door and ceiling clearance as well as the electrical service.

05 Is the TRM3016 suited to steel?

Within limits. The spindle is listed at 15/10 hp (11.2/7.5 kW) and 67 lb-ft (91 Nm) at up to 8,000 rpm, which supports moderate cuts with 40-taper tooling. The 992 lb (450 kg) table load and 10 lb (5 kg) tool weight limit rule out large steel blocks and heavy cutters.
