Overview

The Haas VM-9 is the largest mold machine in the entire Haas lineup, offering 2,540 x 813 x 762 mm (100 x 32 x 30 in) of travel. One hundred inches of X-travel puts this machine in a class typically reserved for gantry mills and large horizontal boring mills costing three to five times as much. For shops machining the longest molds, structural dies, and industrial tooling, the VM-9 provides a VMC-format alternative at an unprecedented price point.

The inline direct-drive spindle runs at 12,000 RPM with 22.4 kW (30 hp) and 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM. Taper options include CT40, BT40, and HSK-A63. The spindle is liquid-cooled for thermal stability on extended finishing passes. Spindle nose to table clearance goes from 102 mm to 864 mm (4 to 34 in).

The table measures 2,540 x 711 mm (100 x 28 in) and holds 2,722 kg (6,000 lb). The 30+1 SMTC (50+1 optional) posts 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip averages. Rapid traverse runs at 12.7 m/min (500 ipm) on all axes. At 100 inches of travel, a full-length rapid takes about 5 seconds.

The machine weighs approximately 17,237 kg (38,000 lb). That mass provides the rigidity needed for stable cutting across the enormous travel envelope but demands serious facility planning for installation.

At a base price around $275,000, the VM-9 is extraordinary value for a 100-inch VMC. The only comparable travel in vertical format from other manufacturers starts well above $600K. For mold shops machining the longest tools, the VM-9 eliminates the need for gantry mills or horizontal boring machines on many applications. Specs derived from Haas VM-6 and VF-14 published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,540 mm (100 in) X-travel is the longest VMC-format mold machine available from any major manufacturer at this price
  • Liquid-cooled 12,000 RPM spindle with HSK-A63 option provides thermal stability for large mold finishing
  • 17,237 kg machine mass ensures rigidity and vibration damping across the full 100-inch envelope
  • 6,000 lb table load supports the heaviest and longest mold bases, dies, and fixtures
  • Base price around $275K replaces gantry mills costing $600K+ for many applications
  • Same NGC control and tooling as all other Haas VMCs for standardized shop floor operation

Limitations

  • 500 ipm rapids across 100 inches means a full-length traverse takes 5+ seconds each way
  • 30 hp spindle is the same as the VM-2; no power increase for this much larger machine
  • 38,000 lb weight requires reinforced foundations and heavy overhead rigging for installation
  • Thermal stability and accuracy cannot match dedicated large-format mold machines from premium builders
  • The enormous footprint consumes significant floor space that may limit other machine placement

Best For

The longest automotive molds including full-length door panels, rocker panels, and fascia molds Industrial stamping dies and forming tools that exceed 80 inches and need single-setup machining Large die casting die work on the longest automotive and appliance tooling Shops replacing gantry mill outsourcing with an in-house VMC solution at a fraction of the cost Pattern and fixture shops working on full-length automotive and aerospace tooling

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Haas VM-9 cost?

Base price is approximately $275,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, HSM software, and the 50+1 tool changer, expect $320,000-$350,000 fully configured.

02 How does the VM-9 compare to the VM-8?

The VM-9 adds 508 mm (20 in) to X-travel (2,540 vs 2,032 mm) and 1,000 lb to table load (6,000 vs 5,000 lb). Same spindle, same Y and Z travel. Table length increases from 80 to 100 inches. Price difference is roughly $50K.

03 Can the VM-9 replace a gantry mill?

For many mold and die applications, yes. The VM-9's 100 x 32 x 30 inch travel handles the same parts as many gantry mills at a quarter of the price. For the highest accuracy and surface finish requirements, a premium gantry mill is still superior.

04 What floor preparation does the VM-9 require?

At 38,000 lb (17,237 kg), the VM-9 requires a reinforced concrete foundation pad designed for the point loading. Consult a structural engineer. Plan for overhead crane access for installation and maintenance.
